Lake-Effect Snow, Chippewa
- When
- January 18, 8:00 AM EST to January 21, 2:00 AM EST
- Where
- Chippewa forecast zone
- Reported by
- Trained Spotter
The coldest air of the winter so far invaded Northern Michigan from the 18th to the 21st. In most of the area, the air was too cold to support heavy lake effect snow.
Deaths and injuries are direct and indirect together, as the offices filed them. Damage is property and crops in the dollars of the year, not adjusted for inflation, and only where an office estimated it.
The episode as NWS APX wrote it up.
The coldest air of the winter so far invaded Northern Michigan from the 18th to the 21st. In most of the area, the air was too cold to support heavy lake effect snow. But in Eastern Upper Michigan, the longer upstream fetch over Lake Superior allowed heavy snow to develop. Paradise, Whitefish Point, and Tahquamenon Falls saw up to a foot of snow during the night of the 18th into the morning of the 19th. And the snow kept on coming, with local six inch accumulations per twenty-four hours continuing through the night of the 20th.
The local office's own words before the first event, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS Gaylord, MI wrote its last area forecast discussion before the first event at Jan 18, 6:34 AM EST, 1 hour 26 minutes earlier.
