AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MISSOULA MT
158 PM MDT SUN MAY 11 2008
.DISCUSSION...THE SHOWERY...COOL WEATHER WILL CONTINUE OVER NW MT
AND NORTH CENTRAL IDAHO THROUGH EARLY MONDAY AS A SLOW MOVING
UPPER TROUGH MOVES SOUTHEAST ALONG THE CONTINENTAL DIVIDE. A COOL
NORTHERLY FLOW WILL DEVELOP ON MONDAY. THIS WILL ALLOW FOR
TEMPERATURES TO REMAIN 5 TO 10 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. TEMPERATURES
WILL REMAIN SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL ON TUESDAY AS A WEAK WAVE MOVES
OVER THE RIDGE (LOCATED ALONG THE COAST) AND INTO THE AREA. SHOWER
ACTIVITY WILL BE ON THE INCREASE DURING THE AFTERNOON. RIGHT NOW
IT APPEARS THAT THIS WEAK SYSTEM WILL EXIT THE AREA EARLY WEDNESDAY
MORNING. ON WEDNESDAY...A STRONG RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE TO THE
WEST WILL BEGIN TO MOVE INLAND AND WILL CREATE A DRAMATIC CHANGE
IN THE OVERALL WEATHER PATTERN.
A SIGNIFICANT RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE WILL BUILD OVER THE REGION
FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE WORK WEEK INTO THE WEEKEND. TEMPERATURES WILL
RISE TO BE SIGNIFICANTLY ABOVE NORMAL THROUGH THE WEEKEND. THE
HIGH TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO CAUSE SIGNIFICANT SNOW MELT IN
THE MOUNTAINS. PLEASE SEE HYDROLOGIC DISCUSSION BELOW. THE MODELS
ARE INDICATING ANOTHER SYSTEM WILL MAKE ITS WAY INTO THE NORTHERN
ROCKIES BY EARLY NEXT WEEK...BUT CONFIDENCE IS LOW FOR THIS
SOLUTION. SINCE MODELS TYPICALLY BREAK DOWN RIDGES TO QUICKLY.
&&
.AVIATION...A PASSING UPPER LEVEL TROUGH WILL ALLOW FOR THE
SCATTERED SHOWER ACTIVITY TO CONTINUE MAINLY OVER THE MOUNTAINS
THROUGH MONDAY MORNING. MOUNTAINS AND PASSES MY BE OBSCURED AT
TIMES BY CLOUDS AND PRECIPITATION.
&&
.HYDROLOGY...COOLER TEMPERATURES HAVE ALLOWED FOR MOST OF THE
RIVER AND STREAM RISES TO LEVEL OFF. THIS TREND IS EXPECTED TO
CONTINUE UNTIL MID WEEK. BY WEEKS END A WARMING TREND WILL ALLOW
FOR SIGNIFICANT STREAM RISES TO BEGIN OCCURRING ONCE AGAIN. SOME
STREAM FLOODING MAY BE POSSIBLE BEGINNING NEXT WEEKEND.
