AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI 358 AM HST TUE JUN 17 2008 .SYNOPSIS... A SURFACE TROUGH WEST OF THE STATE HAS DIMINISHED TRADES WINDS ACROSS THE ISLANDS. CLOUD COVER AND SHOWERS FROM THE TROUGH WILL LINGER OVER KAUAI THIS MORNING BEFORE MOVING NORTHWEST LATER TODAY. TRADE WINDS WILL INCREASE WEDNESDAY...STRENGTHENING TO FRESH TO LOCALLY STRONG THURSDAY AND PERSISTING INTO THE WEEKEND. && .DISCUSSION... A SURFACE TROUGH...FORMED BY AN UPPER LOW...REMAINS 400 MILES NORTHWEST OF KAUAI THIS MORNING. THE TROUGH HAS DECREASED TRADE WINDS OVER THE WESTERN HALF OF THE STATE WHILE THE BIG ISLAND AND MAUI REMAIN UNDER A LIGHT TO MODERATE TRADE WIND REGIME. SOME HEAVIER SHOWERS LOCATED 20 MILES SOUTH OF KAUAI ARE MOVING SLOWLY NORTH AND MAY BRING ADDED SHOWERS TO THE SOUTH SHORE OF KAUAI THIS MORNING. THESE SHOWERS ALONG WITH LIGHTER SHOWERS 50 MILES SOUTH OF OAHU ARE EMBEDDED IN AN OVERCAST LOW CLOUD AREA THAT REACHES FROM KAUAI TO OAHU AND 100 MILES SOUTH OF OAHU. THIS CLOUD MASS AND SHOWERS ARE EXPECTED TO SLOWLY DIMINISH THROUGH THE MORNING. CIRRUS PRODUCED BY THE UPPER LOW IS BEING TRANSPORTED EAST OVER KAUAI THIS MORNING AND WILL PROVIDE ADDED CLOUD COVER THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. THE SURFACE TROUGH REMAINS CLOSE ENOUGH TO INHIBIT TRADE WINDS OVER KAUAI AND OAHU...BUT TRADE WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO PUSH WEST TONIGHT AS THE TROUGH TAKES ITS LEAVE TO THE NORTHWEST. BY WEDNESDAY...MODERATE TO FRESH TRADES WILL BE IN PLACE ACROSS THE STATE...AND THURSDAY WINDS WILL INCREASE INTO THE FRESH TO STRONG CATEGORIES BRINGING SMALL CRAFT ADVISORIES TO WINDIER AREAS OVER HAWAII/S COASTAL WATERS. SHOWERS OVER KAUAI AND OAHU WILL FOCUS OVER INTERIOR SECTIONS AND HIGHER TERRAIN TODAY BEFORE TRANSITIONING TO THE NORMAL WINDWARD AND MAUKA SHOWERS FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK. MAUI COUNTY AND THE BIG ISLAND WILL CONTINUE WITH WINDWARD SHOWERS WITH THE LEEWARD BIG ISLAND SEEING SOME RAINFALL IN THE AFTERNOON AND EVENINGS. && .MARINE...
