AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI
830 PM HST WED JUN 11 2008

.SYNOPSIS...
HIGH PRESSURE FAR TO THE NORTHEAST WILL MAINTAIN LIGHT TRADE WINDS
THROUGH THE WEEKEND AND INTO NEXT WEEK. MOST SHOWERS WILL REMAIN
WINDWARD...THOUGH ISOLATED HEAVIER SHOWERS MAY OCCUR LEEWARD IN THE
AFTERNOON.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
A COMPLEX PATTERN STILL PREVAILED ALOFT OVER THE MAIN HAWAIIAN
ISLANDS. ALTHOUGH A STRONG RIDGE EXTENDED WELL TO THE NORTH...
SIGNIFICANT TROUGHING PERSISTED WITHIN AND ERODED THE BASE OF THE
RIDGE CLOSER TO THE ISLANDS...A BIT LIKE A CAVE WITHIN A HILL.
THUS...THOUGH SUBSIDENCE OVER THE SUBTROPICAL RIDGE AT THE SURFACE
TO THE NORTHEAST REMAINED SUFFICIENT TO KEEP THE LOWER FEATURE FROM
DISSIPATING...ENOUGH UPLIFT OCCURRED RIGHT NEAR THE ISLANDS TO
INTENSIFY SOME TRADE-WIND SHOWERS.

OVER THE NEXT 48 TO 72 HOURS...GUIDANCE PREDICTS THE MID-LEVEL
TROUGHING TO DEEPEN AND EXPAND OUT TO THE NORTHWEST OVER THE
ISLANDS...UNDERCUTTING AND EFFECTIVELY DESTROYING THE SURROUNDING
RIDGE. LESS SUBSIDENCE WILL PERMIT THE SUBTROPICAL RIDGE TO
WEAKEN...AND THUS THE TRADE WINDS TO DIMINISH FURTHER WITH TIME AS
WELL. HOWEVER...RECENT MODEL RUNS HAVE AVOIDED DISSIPATING THE
SURFACE RIDGE COMPLETELY...AND THUS THE TRADES WILL PERSIST AS
WELL...IF IN A GREATLY WEAKENED STATE. ONCE THE TRADES DIMINISH TO
THIS LEVEL...SEA AND LAND BREEZES WILL BECOME LOCALLY SIGNIFICANT.

CLOUD COVER AND PRECIPITATION WILL CHANGE IN CHARACTER ALONG WITH
THE PREVAILING WINDS...THOUGH CORRESPONDINGLY LESS THAN EXPECTED
EARLIER IN THE WEEK. TRADE-WIND SHOWERS STILL WILL PERSIST THROUGH
THE FORECAST PERIOD...BUT THE HEAVIEST SHOWERS MAY SHIFT
INCREASINGLY TO DIURNAL CUMULUS BUILDUPS INLAND AND LEEWARD. SINCE
THE WINDWARD SHOWERS WILL BE MORE WIDESPREAD THAN THE LEEWARD
ONES...THE CHANCE OF RAIN WILL REMAIN HIGHER THERE HOWEVER.

&&

.MARINE...
SURF ALONG SOUTH-FACING SHORES WILL RISE FRIDAY...POSSIBLY REACHING
THE 8-FOOT THRESHOLD FOR A HIGH SURF ADVISORY. ANOTHER LARGER SOUTH
SWELL IS EXPECTED LATE ON SATURDAY.

&&

.HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
NONE.
