Heavy Rain in American Samoa, November 8, 2008

A slow moving trough associated with the low pressure system west of Manua had inundated many low lying areas across the islands. A ridge of high pressure was located northeast of the trough. The 12Z release of the radiosonde on the 8th of November depicted strong winds aloft and light winds in the lower levels. Embedded within the trough were numerous cumulonimbus. A 2.43 inches of precipitation was recorded here at the Pago Pago WSO on the 8th of November. Furthermore, 1.36 inches of precitation was recorded during a heavy rainshower associated with scattered thunderstorms from 5:01 A.M. to 5:25 A.M. The Department of Public Safety and mayors of various villages reported overflows of small streams on roads and low lying areas. Debris from these streams that were washed on roads had caused driving difficult for motorists. After the event, Department of Public Works reported major work of filling pot-holes on and sides of the road across the islands. No other major damages were reported.
