Erin moved onshore near Lamar, TX as a weak tropical storm, but was quickly downgraded to a tropical depression as it moved over land.

Erin moved onshore near Lamar, TX as a weak tropical storm, but was quickly downgraded to a tropical depression as it moved over land. The tropical depression moved northwest over the Edwards Plateau toward west Texas. Erin maintained her depression status as it then began to move northeast into southwest Oklahoma between Hollis and Erick during the afternoon hours of Saturday, August 18th. A very tropical airmass was in place along and east of this feature, extending into western and central Oklahoma. Heavy rainfall developed along and east of the center, which moved slowly to the northeast. Low-level wind shear north and east of Erin increased throughout the evening, with several tornadoes reported in Kiowa, Washita, and Grady counties during the late afternoon and early evening hours. Damage was reported east of Hobart, and in Washita county south and east of Cordell. As the evening progressed, a strong low-level jet developed, with additional thunderstorms developing over southwest and central Oklahoma. Remarkably, the center of the tropical depression strengthened between 1 and 7 AM, with a compact area of sustained winds of 35 to 45 MPH concentrated around the center of the depression. Wind gusts of 50 to 80 mph were also reported over parts of central Oklahoma at this time. As with the wind speeds, thunderstorms intensities increased, with two additional tornadoes reported over central Oklahoma Sunday morning. In addition to tornadoes and very strong winds, rainfall rates of over three inches per hour were common, with significant flash flooding reported in numerous counties. Rainfall amounts exceeded five inches over a large area, with some locations receiving eight to ten inches. Rivers and creeks easily exceeded their banks, with water also rising quickly in many towns. Dozens of people were rescued by boat and helicopter as numerous homes and businesses quickly took on water. Unfortunately, six people lost their lives due to the flooding. 29 thunderstorm wind, 25 flash flood, 10 heavy rain, 7 tornado, 1 lightning. Local standard time, as filed.
A tornado touched down to the east-southeast of Hobart and moved north. The tornado destroyed a large barn, and damaged power lines, numerous trees and farm implements. Monetary damages were estimated.
The tornado was reported by the Cordell fire chief. The tornado lasted approximately 10 minutes. No damage was reported.
A tornado damaged a mobile home and several trees were snapped southwest of Norge. Monetary damages were estimated.
One foot of water was reported over the road at the junction of HWY 277 and HWY 19.
Business HWY 9 was closed due to high water.
HWY 9 between Mountain View and Carnegie was closed due to high water.
The bridge at Bemel Road was severely damaged. Also, several county roads and bridges in and around Fletcher were closed due to high water. Monetary damages were estimated.
A shed was heavily damaged by the high wind. The high wind also caused minor damage to the spotter's home. Monetary damages were estimated.
The county emergency manager reported water four-feet deep over HWY 9. Numerous other roads in Gotebo, Hobart, and Mountain View are closed due to very high water.
A cottonwood tree was blown down and fell over a road in Fort Cobb. Other tree damage was noted across the county. Monetary damages were estimated.
A van carrying three women was washed off of HWY 58 south of Carnegie as torrential rain fell for several hours. Unfortunately, all three women perished as their vehicle was washed downstream. Another car was washed off the roadway six miles south of Carnegie. No injuries were reported with this accident. Monetary damages were estimated.
High winds and torrential rainfall pounded much of Caddo overnight, with widespread flash flooding reported. While seeking shelter from the severe weather, an elderly lady drowned while in her storm shelter. A car carrying a mother and her two children was swept off the roadway, but all three were rescued without injury. In Fort Cobb, a truck was swept off of HWY 146. The driver was able to escape without injury. One hundred homes sustained at least minor damage. Several of these sustained significant damage. In addition to the numerous streets that were closed in Caddo county, 150 bridges also had to be closed. Monetary damages were estimated.
A large tree was knocked over and minor damage occurred to an airplane hangar due to the strong winds. Monetary damages were estimated.

Tree damage was noted from a tornado that moved north in the northeast corner of Caddo County to the northeast of Cogar. The damage path indicated that the tornado crossed into Canadian County about 0.3 miles west of the Canadian/Caddo/Grady county intersection. Monetary damages were estimated.|
Heavy rain and high winds pounded most areas in Blaine county. Rainfall amounts of 5 to 8 inches resulted in widespread flash flooding. In Watonga, the American Horse Road was washed out by the Hal Geyner Farm. One hundred and twenty four residences had minor flood damage, 21 suffered major damage, and five homes were destroyed. At Greenfield, 13 residences had minor flood damage and two had major damage. At Hitchcock, one residence had minor damage. Numerous city and county roads had to be closed due to widespread flash flooding. Monetary damages were estimated.
A tornado that developed in northeastern Caddo County moved north into Canadian County about 0.3 miles west of the Canadian/Caddo/Grady County intersection. The tornado moved north about one half mile damaging trees before dissipating. Monetary damages were estimated.
A tornado touched down just southeast of the center of the town of Minco and moved through the eastern portion of the town. At least four mobile homes in Minco were damaged, with one losing a significant portion of the exterior walls and roof. Trees were also damaged along the path as the tornado moved north crossing the Canadian River into Canadian County. Monetary damages were estimated.
Tree damage continued as the tornado moved north from Grady County into Canadian County between Union City and Minco. The tornado moved just east of the immediate Union City area and then dissipated about a mile north of Union City. Monetary damages were estimated.

Widespread wind damage was reported in and around Geary as strong winds battered the city for several hours. Numerous trees, power poles, and power lines were downed. The Fast Lane Food Mart had its awning ripped off. Numerous signs were blown over. Part of the roof of the nursing home was ripped off. Two persons were injured while evacuating the nursing home. Siding was also removed from a house, and the garage doors were blown inward. Monetary damages were estimated.
Widespread wind damage was reported in and near Watonga. Prolonged high winds and numerous severe gusts occurred in and around Watonga from 1 am until around 415 am. 82 mph winds were reported at Watonga airport at 254 am before weather instruments stopped reporting. One open hangar and 2 T-hangars were completely destroyed.|Six planes were damaged, some severely. Windows were blown out of numerous businesses. Numerous trees, power poles, and power lines were blown down. A train car was on its side after being blown off the track. Two light towers at the baseball field collapsed and one was bent. Monetary damages were estimated.
A large swath of wind damage was observed, which included the cities of Okeene and Greenfield. A roof was ripped off a grocery story in Okeene, with numerous trees, power lines, and power poles downed. Minor structural damage was observed to an open garage in Greenfield, with numerous trees, power lines, and power poles also downed. Monetary damages were estimated.
Several power poles were blown down on I-40 near Country Club Road. Monetary damages were estimated.
A house and two vehicles were washed away by the high water from Stinking Creek. The flood water was five feet deep near the location of the house. Monetary damages were estimated.
A driver had to be rescued due to very high water approximately 1 mile south of HWY 9 on county road 2420. A 0.5 mile section of hwy 9 was also closed near this location.
Several tree limbs were downed. Monetary damages were estimated.
A Bradford pear tree was downed at Adams and 7th Street. Numerous tree limbs were downed by the high winds. Monetary damages were estimated.
The Chickasha PD received major damage due to flooding, including the phone system, the communication system, data system, and the heating and air conditioning systems. Several businesses sustained damage. The River Bend Golf course received significant damage, including several greens destroyed and part of a golf cart path ripped up. It was reported that new flooring would be required at the Chickasha YMCA due to flooding in almost every room, as well as significant damage to the roof. The Grady County Courthouse received some minor flood damage. Performance Plus also received significant damage. HWY 37 was closed due to several feet of water covering the roadway one mile west of Tuttle. Also in Tuttle, the bridge used by the Stillwater Central Railroad received some damage and became impassable. In Minco, the Buggy Creek Bridge had to be closed due to water running over the top of it. Monetary damages were estimated.
HWY 81 was closed near I-40 due to high water, with a car and semi both stranded due to high water. Other roads that were closed included SW 27th between Miles and South Lawn Drive, and Skyview Drive south of Curtis Street. Numerous homes sustained at least minor damage, and the Russell-Murray Hospice sustained severe damage. Monetary damages were estimated.
A 5-inch diameter tree limb was downed by the high winds at Council Road and 37th Street. Monetary damages were estimated.
A home was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. Monetary damages were estimated.
A barn was flooded north of State HWY 39 and Sooner Road. Juneau Street was also flooded in Purcell. Monetary damages were estimated.
Numerous county roads and bridges were closed county wide as torrential rain and sustained severe winds battered the county. In Calumet, portions of the town's water lines were washed out. In Mustang, HWY 152 was closed west of town. Numerous persons had to be rescued from their vehicles, but no injuries were reported. HWY 4 was closed in Mustang due to the high water. The wastewater treatment plant received some minor damage. In Okarche, the Prong bridge east of town was closed due to water running over top of it. The roadway was also closed near the Meyer Dairy Farm. In Piedmont, a car was washed off of Banner Road. The driver had to be rescued but was unharmed. The car was a total loss. The intersection of Apache and 206th street between Piedmont and Cemetery road was closed due to high water. Monetary damages were estimated.
Highways 4 and 92 were closed due to high water. At 6:38 AM CDT, a motorist had to be rescued at Mustang Road and Wagner due the high water. Several other roads in town had to be closed as well due to the flooding. A bridge on Oak Street was severely damaged, requiring significant renovation. Also, extensive farm land was flooded on the north side of town. Two homes at Kingsway Court had 12-18 inches of water in them. Monetary damages were estimated.
Large trees were snapped in Norman by strong winds, including near Classen Boulevard and Boyd Street, and along Jenkins Avenue on the University of Oklahoma campus.|
HWY 152 was impassable due to high water 1/2 mile east of HWY 58.
Numerous streets were closed due to high water. One road collapsed due to the persistent rainfall this year. One bridge sustained minor damage. The bridge to Glen Floyd's Barn was was washed out. Monetary damages were estimated.
Numerous city roads were closed due to the high water. Several other county roads and bridges also were closed. A few of the bridges received minor damage. The Stafford Air and Space Center received minor damage with as much as 100 gallons of water in several of the rooms. A road was closed three miles southeast of Thomas due to high water. Monetary damages were estimated.
Historic flooding impacted the area in and around the city of Kingfisher. Four feet of water was flowing over HWY 33 in Kingfisher. Four to five feet of water was flowing over HWY 81 between Kingfisher and Dover. Several cars were stalled due to water over HWY 81 north of Okarche. An elderly couple had to be rescued by an OHP helicopter after their car was washed off US HWY 81. Both sustained minor injuries. A 52-year old man died as he tried to flee his vehicle after it had been washed off of HWY 33 14 miles west of Kingfisher. Several homes and businesses sustained major flood damage, with others faring slightly better. The First Baptist Church had 20,000 gallons of water in the basement, which included the kitchen. Most appliances sustained damage and most were a total loss. Monetary damages were estimated.
Several feet of water was reported over the roadway at NW 36th and Broadway. Four cars were stranded as a result. Numerous other city streets were closed due to high water as well.
A couple of homes were flooded on Lahoma street. Monetary damages were estimated.

Very heavy rainfall flooded portions of the Highland Dairy Farm, including the Dairy storage section of the property. Monetary damages were estimated.
A couple of feet of water covered the wastewater treatment plant. Several outlets, fans, and pumps were damaged as a result. The Tecumseh High School had one inch of water in several classrooms. Five feet of water accumulated at Broadway and Tecumseh. Water was over the vehicle roofs near the US 177 interchange. Five residences received minor flood damage. A couple of residents had to be rescued from their home, as well as 5 people from their vehicles due to the high water. Numerous streets were flooded in Shawnee as well due to the high water. The southern portions of Pottawatomie county had extensive fence damage due to baled hay and other debris being washed through them. Numerous roads were closed in Bethel Acres, Pink, Brooksville, Macomb, and Wannette. In Earlsboro, one woman and two children had to be rescued from their vehicle at Kings Road. No injuries were reported at any location. Monetary damages were estimated.
Three to four feet of water accumulated at the Seminole Ford/Mercury car dealership. Numerous city and county roads were closed due to the high water. A 67-year old woman drowned as her car was washed off the roadway into Magnolia Creek.
As the offices recorded each death: direct deaths were caused by the weather itself, indirect ones by something it set in motion.
