AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MISSOULA MT 237 PM MDT SUN AUG 5 2007 .DISCUSSION...THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT. THE FIRST OF TWO STRONG SHORT WAVE TROUGHS WILL MOVE TO THE NE ACROSS THE AREA LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING BRINGING SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS. STORMS WILL INITIALLY START OFF AS A MIX OF WET AND DRY...BUT WILL MOISTEN UP IN THE EVENING AS THE WAVE MOVES ACROSS WEST CENTRAL AND SW MT. CONVECTION WILL TAPER OFF FROM SW TO NE OVERNIGHT AS THE WAVE EXITS THE AREA. THE TROUGH THAT IS CURRENTLY LOCATED ALONG THE WA/OR COAST WILL APPROACH FROM THE WEST ON MONDAY...BRINGING SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS THAT SHOULD PERSIST INTO THE EVENING. RIGHT NOW IT LOOKS LIKE THIS TROUGH WILL HAVE SLIGHTLY MORE MOISTURE ASSOCIATED WITH IT...SO THAT ANY STORMS THAT DEVELOP SHOULD BE WET. TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY...AS THE TROUGH EXITS THE REGION ON TUESDAY THE UPPER LEVEL FLOW WILL BECOME ZONAL (WESTERLY). GUSTY WESTERLY WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO MIX TO THE SURFACE DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS UNDER THIS FLOW PATTERN. TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO BE AROUND SEASON NORMALS. THE ZONAL FLOW WILL PERSIST THROUGH THURSDAY THEN A TROUGH WILL DIG ALONG THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST COAST. THIS TROUGH WILL CAUSE THE UPPER LEVEL FLOW TO TRANSITION TO SOUTHWESTERLY. THIS FLOW PATTERN IS EXPECTED TO LINGER THROUGH THE WEEKEND WITH TEMPERATURES WARMING 5 TO 10 DEGREES ABOVE NORM. THE MONSOONAL MOISTURE WILL BE ALLOWED TO CREEP FARTHER TO THE NORTH UNDER THIS FLOW REGIME...SO A FEW SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS COULD DEVELOP ACROSS SOUTHWEST MONTANA AND CENTRAL IDAHO DURING THIS TIME PERIOD. && .AVIATION...WILDFIRE SMOKE WILL AGAIN REDUCE VISIBILITY DOWN TO 2 MILES IN AREAS THIS AFTERNOON ACROSS.
