AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI
330 AM HST THU SEP 6 2007

.SYNOPSIS...TRADE WINDS WILL BE ON THE LIGHTER SIDE INTO FRIDAY...
INCREASING SLIGHTLY OVER THE WEEKEND. MORNING LAND BREEZES WILL GIVE
WAY TO SEA BREEZES THIS AFTERNOON...WITH CLOUDS DEVELOPING OVER
LEEWARD AREAS THIS AFTERNOON. RELATIVELY DRY WEATHER WILL PREVAIL
TODAY...BUT TRADE WINDS WILL DELIVER A FEW SHOWERS TO WINDWARD AND
MAUKA AREAS THEREAFTER.

&&

.DISCUSSION...THE TRADE WIND-SUPPORTING RIDGE TO OUR NORTH HAS BEEN
WEAKENED AND NUDGED SOUTHWARD...AS A FRONT FAR TO OUR NORTHWEST HAS
DUG INTO ITS WESTERN EDGE. THE FRONT IS IN THE PROCESS OF
WEAKENING...BUT WILL KEEP THE RIDGE SUPPRESSED THROUGH TONIGHT.
ALTHOUGH ANOTHER FRONT WILL FOLLOW THIS FIRST ONE OVER THE
WEEKEND...IT WILL NOT DIG AS FAR SOUTH...AND THE RIDGE WILL
GRADUALLY STRENGTHEN BEGINNING FRIDAY...ALLOWING TRADE SPEEDS TO
BUILD TO MODERATE SPEEDS OVER THE WEEKEND. MODERATE TRADES WILL
CONTINUE UNTIL THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK...WHEN WEAK TROUGHING FAR
NORTHEAST OF THE ISLANDS WILL LOOSEN THE PRESSURE GRADIENT...
RESULTING IN LIGHTER WINDS AGAIN.

WEAK RIDGING ALOFT WILL PERSIST...PREVENTING DEEP CONVECTION FROM
OCCURRING. HOWEVER...THE SOMEWHAT ELEVATED INVERSION BASE...NEAR 8
THOUSAND FEET...WILL ALLOW INCOMING MOISTURE FIELDS TO DELIVER A FEW
WINDWARD-BASED SHOWERS. IMMEDIATELY UPSTREAM OF THE ISLANDS...FEW TO
SCATTERED CLOUDS ARE SEEN...AND A RELATIVELY DRY DAY IS EXPECTED.
FURTHER EAST...TWO CLOUD AREAS ARE POSSIBLE SOURCES FOR SHOWERS OVER
THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.

ONE AREA OF CLOUDS AND SHOWERS IS CURRENTLY NEAR 21N 151W...AND IS
MOVING WEST NEAR 13 MPH. THIS AREA IS EXPECTED TO ARRIVE OVER
WINDWARD BIG ISLAND BY THIS EVENING...AND SPREAD WEST UP THE ISLAND
CHAIN TONIGHT AND EARLY FRIDAY. ANOTHER AREA OF MOISTURE...WHICH CAN
TRACED BACK TO THE REMNANTS OF EX-EASTERN PACIFIC TROPICAL
DEPRESSION GIL...IS LOCATED FROM 18N TO 25N BETWEEN 146W AND 142W.
CONFIDENCE REMAINS LOW...BUT THIS AREA IS FORECAST TO ARRIVE ON
SATURDAY AND LINGER THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT...THEREBY SLIGHTLY
COMPLICATING THE ALL IMPORTANT WEEKEND FORECAST. WITH TRADES
BLOWING...THESE CLOUD AREAS WILL FOCUS THEIR SHOWERS ON WINDWARD
SLOPES...AND LEEWARD AREAS SHOULD SEE LOTS OF SUN. HAVE NOT
EXPLICITLY PLACED THIS SECOND AREA OF MOISTURE INTO THE GRIDS...
BUT INSTEAD HAVE TRENDED THE FORECAST TOWARD A CLIMATOLOGICAL POP
REGIME FOR THE WEEKEND.
