A fire blackened 600 acres of mainly brush 7 miles east of Waikoloa Village on the lee side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Dry conditions in the area, along with winds occasionally gusting to 20 mph, were factors in the spread of the fire.

A fire blackened 600 acres of mainly brush 7 miles east of Waikoloa Village on the lee side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Dry conditions in the area, along with winds occasionally gusting to 20 mph, were factors in the spread of the fire. No structures became threatened, and no serious injuries were reported. Damage estimates were not available. The cause of the blaze was unknown.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI 1000 AM HST THU JUN 14 2007 .SYNOPSIS...A RIDGE FAR NORTH OF THE ISLANDS WILL PRODUCE TRADE WINDS THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK. SHOWERS AND CLOUDS IN THE TRADE-WIND FLOW WILL AFFECT MAINLY THE WINDWARD AND MAUKA SECTIONS. SOME SHOWERS MAY SPREAD LEEWARD ON THE SMALLER ISLANDS...MAINLY AT NIGHT AND IN THE MORNING. && .DISCUSSION...JUNE USUALLY BRINGS PERSISTENT TRADE WINDS AND LIGHT RAINFALL...AND LOOKS LIKE THAT WILL BE TRUE FOR AT LEAST THE NEXT WEEK. HIGH PRESSURE NORTH OF THE ISLANDS WILL KEEP TRADE WINDS BLOWING. THE TRADES WILL CARRY LOW CLOUDS WITH EMBEDDED SHOWERS OVER THE ISLANDS. MOST OF THE SHOWERS WILL FALL OVER WINDWARD AREAS.THE SHOWERS WILL BE MOST ACTIVE AT NIGHT AND EARLY IN THE MORNING AND DURING THOSE PERIODS...SOME OF THE SHOWERS MAY REACH THE LEE AREAS OF THE SMALLER ISLANDS. THERE WILL BE SOME AFTERNOON SHOWERS OVER LEEWARD AREAS OF MAUI AND THE BIG ISLAND BUT THESE SHOWERS WILL BE VERY ISOLATED AND WILL NOT HELP MUCH WITH THE DRY CONDITIONS. A LOW ALOFT IS PULLING HIGH CLOUDS UP OVER THE ISLANDS FROM THE SOUTH. THESE CLOUDS WILL DIM THE SUNSHINE...ESPECIALLY OVER MAUI AND THE BIG ISLAND...BUT WILL NOT PRODUCE ANY RAINFALL. WE HAVE UPDATED THE GRIDS AND TEXT FORECASTS TO INCREASE THE CLOUD COVER BECAUSE OF THE HIGH CLOUDS. THE TRADE-WIND CLOUDS AND SHOWERS...AND TO A LESSER EXTENT THE HIGH CLOUDS...ARE KEEPING TEMPERATURES FROM GETTING TOO HIGH...ESPECIALLY OVER WINDWARD AREAS. BASED ON BUOY DATA...WEB CAMERAS AND COMPUTER FORECASTS...WE HAVE DECIDED TO ISSUE A HIGH SURF ADVISORY. THE SURF WILL BE INCONSISTENT...BUT SOME WAVES WILL REACH THE 8 FOOT ADVISORY THRESHOLD. A SURFACE LOW NORTHWEST OF THE ISLANDS HAS BEEN KEEPING THE TRADE WINDS LIGHTER THAN THEY MIGHT OTHERWISE BE. THE COMPUTER MODELS SHOW THE LOW MOVING OFF TO THE NORTH OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. AS THE LOW MOVES AWAY...AND RIDGING BUILDS IN FROM THE NORTHEAST...OUR TRADE WINDS WILL STRENGTHEN.
