The episode as NWS FFC wrote it up.

An unseasonably strong cold front was moving rapidly southeast through the eastern states early on the 4th. This was supported by a very deep polar low intensifying across southeast Canada. Very warm, humid, and unstable conditions continued in advance of this winterlike cold front. A squall line of thunderstorms developed during the afternoon of the 3rd from the Ohio Valley into the Tennessee Valley. This squall line continued to race out in advance of the front, reaching far north Georgia around midnight EDT and continued further south into central Georgia as a broken squall line during the early morning hours of the 4th. Considerable wind damage occurred in association with the squall line across some north Georgia counties. Several dozen homes were damaged in Hall county, including one blown off its foundation. Other significant wind damage was noted in Dade and several other north Georgia counties.

A WARM MOIST AIRMASS WILL REMAIN IN PLACE ACROSS GEORGIA TODAY AND
TONIGHT. A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL APPROACH GEORGIA FROM THE WEST
TONIGHT.

.PRIMARY HAZARDS...
THE PRIMARY HAZARDS FROM THE THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE LARGE HAIL AND
CLOUD TO GROUND LIGHTNING.

.DISCUSSION...
A STRONG COLD FRONT OVER THE MID SECTION OF THE COUNTRY WILL
APPROACH GEORGIA TONIGHT. THE ATMOSPHERE AHEAD OF THE FRONT WILL
DESTABILIZE...ESPECIALLY THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. CAPE VALUES
WILL RISE TO NEAR 1200 AND LIFTED INDEX VALUES WILL DROP TO -1 TO
-4 ACROSS EXTREME NORTHWEST GEORGIA THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING.
WHILE THERE IS A CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS ALL OF NORTH AND
CENTRAL GEORGIA LATER THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT...THE STRONGEST
STORMS...WHICH COULD REACH SEVERE LEVELS...WILL BE MAINLY WEST OF A

The Dade County Emergency Management Director reported that strong straight-line winds caused considerable damage between Trenton and Wildwoon. One home lost part of its roof and a number of trees were also blown down on the property. Four other structures were damaged along Hales Gap Road and near the Slygo Gap exit on Interstate-59. One home was completely lifted off its foundation by the strong winds. In addition, the steeple was blown off a church in the area. Several trees were also down in the region.

The White County Emergency Management Director reported that between 30 and 40 trees were blown down near the Intersection of U.S. 129 and Collins Road, about five miles south of Cleveland. In addition, a chicken house was destroyed in the same area. The damage was determined to be straight-line wind damage. Numerous other trees were down in the northeast part of the county northeast of Helen. Georgia Highway 17 north of Helen was closed and blocked because of downed trees.

The Dawson County Emergency Management Director reported that a squall line of thunderstorms with strong straight-line winds had caused considerable damage in the northeast part of the county, northeast of Juno near the Dawson/Lumpkin county line. Numerous large trees were down in the area and several structures and property in the area had received minor to moderate damage. Most of the damage was confined to Greenway Road where three homes sustained minor wind damage, mostly in the form of damage of siding, decks, and fences. A number of large trees were also down in these same areas causing additional damage to property. A couple of work shops were also damaged in the same area when portions of tin roofs were blown off the structures in addition to siding damage. Power lines and power poles were also down. Outside of this area, the public and the Dawson County Emergency Management Director reported that trees were down in other scattered areas about the county, but most notably in the southern part of the county near the Forsyth county line along Cowart and Kelly Bridge Roads. Greenway, Cowart, and Kelly Bridge roads all had to be closed for several hours because of numerous downed trees on the roadways.

The Cherokee Tribune reported that strong straight-line winds caused considerable damage in the Clayton Estates Community off Lower Burris road in north central Cherokee county. A chicken house was destroyed and another was damaged. A county school bus was destroyed when a large tree fell on the vehicle crushing the bus parked in the driver's yard. Several other large trees were down in the area.

WSB Television of Atlanta reported that several trees were down in the far northern portion of Fulton county between Crabapple and Birmingham. Some power lines were also down in the area. Trees were down on Hickory Road, Birmingham Road, Autry Mill, and Dill Mill Roads. The Milton Herald reported that trees were also down on Medlock Bridge Road, causing it to be blocked and closed.

A survey conducted by the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia and damage reports received from the Hall Emergency Management Director, a cooperative observer, and the public confirmed that a microburst with straight-line winds of 70 to 80 mph with isolated damage of 100-110 mph caused considerable damage to a subdivision just east of Interstate-985 and just south of Flowery Branch. The path of damage was approximately one-half mile long and a mile wide. At least 35 homes sustained roof and siding damage and dozens of large trees were blown down or completely uprooted in the area. One home was blown 15 feet off its foundation and destroyed as it collapsed. Windows were blown out of at least one home and several vehicles. Other vehicles were damaged from downed trees or debris. One man was injured when his locked and bolted door blew open with the winds and knocked him into a nearby wall. There were reports of other trees down in the southern part of the county, but especially in the far southern part of the county near the Gwinnett county line. The majority of the damage was confined to Devonshire, Hillsdale, and Glenmore Drives.

The Daily Tribune News of Cartersville reported that lightning struck a home on Euharlee-Five Forks Road. The resulting fire was quickly contained. Nonetheless, the home sustained moderate damage.

The Gwinnett Daily Post reported that seven homes within the county, mainly in the northwest portion between Duluth and Buford, were damaged by strong straight-line winds. The homes were mainly damaged when large trees fell on the structures. The most significant damage was reported at the Saratoga Spring Apartment Complex in Duluth, where a large tree destroyed four apartment units.

The Heard County Fire Chief reported that 15 to 20 trees were snapped off at the intersection of U.S. Highway 27 and West Ferry Road just north of Centralhatchee. A recreational vehicle at the Overnight RV Park was blown over causing injury to a woman inside the vehicle. She sustained cuts and scrapes when the vehicle was rolled over. In addition, a wooden shed was also blown over.

The Rockdale Citizen of Conyers reported that many trees were blown down throughout much of the county from strong straight-line winds. The majority of the downed trees were in the north and east part of the county. Trees were down on Bethel Road, Old Covington Road, Susong Road, and Dennard Road. However, no power lines were reported down.

The Macon Telegraph reported that strong straight-line winds blew down a number of trees and power lines throughout the county, including the city of Macon. At least 1500 people were left without power during the early morning hours. Winds gusts of 48 mph were measured at the Macon airport south of the city of Macon, but greater wind gusts were estimated elsewhere.
