AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CLEVELAND OHIO
1142 PM EST THU MAR 9 2006

.AVIATION (06Z-06Z)...
LOW PRESSURE MOVING UP THROUGH ILLINOIS INTO MISSOURI WILL BRING
GUSTY WINDS TO THE FORECAST AREA OVERNIGHT INTO FRIDAY MORNING.
CEILINGS SHOULD REMAIN VFR THROUGH THE NIGHT AND GO MVFR TOMORROW
MORNING AS THE LOW PUSHES OFF TO THE NORTHEAST. LARGE SWATH OF RAIN
HEADED NORTHEAST TOWARD THE AREA SO WILL ACCOUNT FOR THAT IN TAFS
ACROSS THE AREA OVERNIGHT. VISIBILITIES SHOULD DROP TO NO MORE THAN
MVFR THROUGH THE PERIOD.
&&

.SHORT TERM(TONIGHT INTO FRI MRNG)...
DEEPENING LOW PRESSURE NOW OVER SRN ILLINOIS. THIS LOW SHOULD TRACK
INTO SRN LOWER MI BY 06Z. A FEW CONCERNS FOR THIS UPDATE ARE
WINDS...AND POTENTIAL FOR THUNDERSTORM ESPECIALLY WITH LOW TOPPED
CONVECTION IN THE AREA OF STEEPER LAPSE RATES UNDER THE COLD POOL.

THE 21Z RUC SUGGESTS THAT THE AREA OF STORMS OVR THE BOOTHEEL OF MO
AND WRN KY/TN WL MOVE TOWARD THE AREA OVERNIGHT. ALTHOUGH
INSTABILITY IS NIL ATTM ACROSS OHIO...AS THE COLDER AIR ALOFT
ASSOCIATED WITH THE UPR LVL WAVE MOVES OVERHEAD AFTER 06Z...EXPECT
LAPSE RATES TO STEEPEN CAUSING MUCAPE VALUES PER 21Z RUC OF 100-200
J/KG ACROSS THE AREA BY 09Z. ALTHOUGH THIS DOES NOT SEEM LIKE
MUCH...WITH STRONG DYNAMICS AND HIGH SHEAR VALUES...IT WILL NOT TAKE
MUCH CONVECTIVE ACTIVITY TO MIX THE STRONGER WINDS ABOVE THE
BOUNDARY LAYER DOWN TO THE SFC. WL THEREFORE KEEP THUNDERSTORMS IN
THE FCST...BUT NOT MENTION GUSTY WINDS WITH THE STORMS SINCE IT IS
STILL UNCERTAIN THAT THE STORMS WILL SUSTAIN THEIR CURRENT STRENGTH
AS THEY MOVE INTO THE FORECAST AREA. AS FOR THE WIND ADVY...AGREE
WITH THE PREVIOUS SHIFT THAT THE THERE ARE SOME COMPLICATING FACTORS
WITH STRONG SYNOPTIC WINDS. IT IS VERY HARD FOR STRONG WINDS TO
DEVELOP IN THE WARM SECTOR UNLESS THEY ARE BEING HELPED BY
CONVECTION. IN FACT...ONLY MARGINAL ADVY GUSTS ARE OCCURRING IN THE
WARM SECTOR AT THIS TIME. TO GET STRONGER WINDS BEHIND THE FRONT
STRONG COLD ADVECTION IS NEEDED WITH A STRONG ISOALLOBARIC
COMPONENT. THE NAM AND GFS SHOW THAT THE BEST COLD ADVECTION WL BE
OVER MI. HOWEVER THE PURE GRADIENT WINDS COMBINED WITH 3 HR PRES
RISES OF 6-9MB WILL PROBABLY BE ENOUGH FOR ADVY TYPE WINDS SEVERAL
HOURS ON EITHER SIDE OF FROPA. STILL THINK 25-30 G45 MPH SEEM
REASONABLE...ALTHOUGH IF THE CONVECTION CAN SUSTAIN ITSELF FROM MO
INTO THE REGION SOME STRONGER THUNDERSTORM GUSTS ARE CERTAINLY
POSSIBLE.

AS FOR TEMPS...IT SEEMS HARD FOR ME TO BELIEVE THAT TEMPS WL REALLY
DROP MUCH UNTIL FROPA WHICH WILL BE BETWEEN 10-13Z. THINK THE WRN
AREAS HAVE THE BEST CHANCE FOR COOLING INTO THE MID-UPR 40S...BUT
THINKING THE ERN AREAS WILL STAY IN THE 50-55 RANGE. WL THEREFORE
BUMP UP TEMPS ALL ZONES TONIGHT.

ZONES OUT BY 915 PM...NPW OUT BY 945 PM.

&&

.SHORT TERM(TONIGHT THRU SATURDAY NIGHT)...
WENT WITH A WIND ADVISORY AS MODELS AT FROPA ARE TRYING TO BRING
DOWN AT LEAST 40 KNOTS OF WINDS. IN FACT THE 18Z NAM AND 12Z GFS NOW
HAVE 50 TO 55 KNOTS AT 925 MB AT FROPA. THE COLD ADVECTION ISNT
REAL STRONG BUT THE POTENTIAL IS THERE TO COME DOWN. IT IS A
MARGINAL EVENT. FOR THIS EVENING AMS SHOULD BE STABLE JUST FOR
SHOWERS AND THEN AS THE FRONT GETS CLOSER AND ELEVATED CONVECTION
SHOULD KICK IN. ATTM DONT THINK IT WILL BE SEVERE AS THE FRONT
MOVES EAST AMS SHOULD BE MORE STABLE. THIS WILL HAVE TO BE
MONITORED. SOME PCPN JUST WITH FROPA AND THEN DECREASING CLOUDS. GFS
HANGS UNTO THE PCPN A LITTLE LONGER WHICH MIGHT NOT BE BAD WITH UVV.
FLOOD GUIDANCE IS HIGH OVER 2 INCHES FOR NORTHWEST OHIO THUS NO
WATCH ISSUED FOR TONIGHT AS RAINFALL WILL BE AROUND AN INCH. THE
FLOOD GUIDANCE FOR NW PA IS LOW...BUT RAINFALL SHOULD BE
LIGHT...HOWEVER...THIS NEEDS TO BE WATCHED. DRY FRIDAY NIGHT AND
THEN A TROUGH FOR SATURDAY CHANCE POPS. GFS AND NAM HAVE SOME TIMING
DIFFERENCES ON THIS. SATURDAY NIGHT ANOTHER COLD FRONT MOVES IN.
GUIDANCE TEMPS OK.

&&

.LONG TERM(SUN-THU)...
GFS AND ECMWF IN AGREEMENT WITH A COLD FRONT FOR SUNDAY AND THEN THE
FRONT PUSHING BACK NORTH AS A WARM FRONT SUNDAY NIGHT AND THEN
ANOTHER COLD FRONT ON TUESDAY WITH FALLING TEMPERATURES AND A THREAT
OF RAIN CHANGING TO SNOW SHOWERS. LOW LEVEL THICKNESS STAYS UP FOR A
BIT. TEMPS ARE TOUGH SUNDAY AND MONDAY WITH A BOUNDARY IN THE AREA.
ANOTHER BOUNDARY IN THE AREA THURSDAY FOR A CHANCE OF SNOW SHOWERS.
