AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI 1000 AM HST MON MAR 27 2006 .SYNOPSIS... CLOUDY AND WET WEATHER WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE WEEK...AS A TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE LINGERS JUST WEST OF THE STATE. && .DISCUSSION... A TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE BOTH AT THE SURFACE AND ALOFT HAS BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR CLOUDY AND WET WEATHER PATTERN. THE TROUGH HAS BEEN LINGERING TO THE WEST OF THE STATE WITH PERIODIC VORTICITY IMPULSES ROTATING AROUND THE TROUGH PROVIDING THE HEAVIER SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS. ONE SUCH IMPULSE IS SEEN ON WATER VAPOR IMAGERY TO THE WEST SOUTHWEST OF THE STATE. THIS IS LIKELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEEP CONVECTION JUST TO THE SOUTH OF THE SMALLER ISLANDS AND JUST WEST OF THE BIG ISLAND. THE 12Z GFS SEEMS TO HAVE A GOOD HANDLE ON THIS FEATURE. THE NEXT STRONG IMPULSE IS PROGGED BY THE GFS TO ROTATE THROUGH IN THE LATE WEDNESDAY INTO THURSDAY TIME FRAME. SO LITTLE CHANGE FROM OUR PRESENT WEATHER IS EXPECTED INTO THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE WITH GENERALLY CLOUDY SKIES WITH PERIODS OF SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS EXPECTED. OBSERVATIONS FROM THE HIGH SUMMITS ON MAUI AND THE BIG ISLAND SHOW RATHER STRONG WINDS OCCURRING. A thunderstorm toppled trees in Wailea and Kula, and downed power lines in Kahului, on the island of Maui. An emergency manager estimated wind gusts to at least 50 knots with the storm. There were no serious injuries; damage estimates were not available.
