AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SEATTLE WA
305 PM PDT SUN JUN 5 2005

.SYNOPSIS...A COOL UPPER LEVEL TROUGH WILL SLOWLY MEANDER ACROSS
WESTERN WASHINGTON THROUGH TUESDAY...BRINGING COOL AND SHOWERY
WEATHER...AND A CHANCE OF AFTERNOON AND EVENING THUNDERSTORMS
THROUGH MONDAY. SHOWERS WILL DECREASE WEDNESDAY WHEN TROUGH SHIFTS
EAST AND A WEAK UPPER LEVEL RIDGE BUILDS OVER THE AREA. WESTERLY
FLOW ALOFT AND ONSHORE FLOW WILL MAINTAIN MILD TEMPERATURES AND A
SMALL CHANCE OF SHOWERS AFTER MIDWEEK.

&&

.DISCUSSION...SHOWERS HAVE DEVELOPED ACROSS THE AREA THIS AFTERNOON
WITH THE MOST VIGOROUS ACTIVITY OVER PUGET SOUND AND THE SOUTHWEST
INTERIOR. ONLY A COUPLE OF STRAY LIGHTNING STRIKES SO FAR EAST OF
TACOMA. ECHO TOPS HAVE SLOWLY GONE UP FROM AROUND 15K TO 17K. EXPECT
THIS TREND TO CONTINUE AND A FEW MORE THUNDERSTORMS TO DEVELOP. NAM
MODEL SEEMED TO HAVE A GOOD HANDLE ON THIS TODAY...EVEN SOME OF THE
FINER DETAILS.

THE UPPER LOW CENTER IS STILL JUST OFFSHORE THIS AFTERNOON. PROGS
BRING IT OVERHEAD MONDAY. WITH THE COLDEST AIR ALOFT TOMORROW EXPECT
THE CONVECTION TO BE A LITTLE MORE ACTIVE AND PERHAPS START A LITTLE
EARLIER. NAM/ETA CONVECTIVE TEMPS REMAIN NEAR 55 WITH 850-500MB
LAPSE RATES NEAR 7C/KM. NO WAY TO TARGET THE BEST AREAS AT THIS
POINT SO WILL STICK WITH BLANKET COVERAGE FOR WESTERN WA OUT THROUGH
EARLY EVENING.

THE MAIN LOW CENTER SHIFTS EAST TUESDAY...BUT A WEAK SECONDARY LOW
HANGS BACK NEAR THE NW OREGON COAST INTO TUESDAY EVENING. PORTLAND
OFFICE EXTENDED LIKELY POPS INTO TUESDAY EVENING SO HAVE EXTENDED
THE LIKELY POPS IN THE TUE AFTERNOON GRIDS A FEW HOURS TO BLEND IN.

BOTH 12Z GFS AND ECMWF SHOW A WEAK RIDGE BUILDING OVER THE AREA ON
WEDNESDAY BEHIND THE UPPER LOW. THIS LATEST RUN IS A LITTLE STRONGER
WITH THE RIDGE THAN THE 00Z OR 06Z GFS. CONFIDENCE IN THE PROGS
STILL ISNT THE HIGHEST THOUGH. FOR NOW WILL MAINTAIN 20 POPS FOR
SHOWERS THOUGH WED/THU WILL LIKELY BE DRY FOR MOST AREAS.

BOTH GFS/ECMWF AGREE ON MORE ZONAL FLOW DEVELOPING OFFSHORE
FRIDAY-SUNDAY...AROUND AN UPPER LOW CENTERED NEAR THE GULF OF AK.
WITH THE DOOR WIDE OPEN TO ANY WEAK SYSTEM APPROACHING THE AREA WILL
MAINTAIN 20 POPS THROUGH THE PERIOD. 12Z GFS HAS A WEAK TROUGH
REACHING THE AREA FRIDAY...BUT APPARENTLY HAS JUMPED AROUND A LITTLE
ON TIMING. 500 MB HEIGHTS ARE HIGHER SO IT SHOULD BE A LITTLE
WARMER. KAM

&&

.AVIATION...UPR TROF WILL STALL OVER THE AREA TONIGHT AND MONDAY.
MULTIPLE CLOUD LAYERS BETWEEN 3000 AND 8000 FEET WITH CEILINGS
LOCALLY LOWER IN HEAVIER SHOWERS UNTIL 04Z. AMS SLIGHTLY UNSTBL THIS
EVENING WITH ISOLD THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE UNTIL 04Z. KSEA...S/SWLY
WIND ARND 10 KT THIS EVENING BECOMING 5KT OR LESS LATER TONIGHT.

&&

.SEW WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...NONE.

&&

.KATX...VCP12/CSR21 OPERATIONAL.
