What happened

The episode as NWS PHI wrote it up.

A wintry mix of snow to freezing rain fell across Sussex County during the daylight hours on the 14th. Precipitation started as snow during the morning of the 14th and accumulated one to two inches before it changed briefly to freezing rain during the late afternoon. Precipitation then changed to plain rain and continued through the evening. Before the change to plain rain, untreated roadways were slippery. The wintry mix of precipitation was caused by a low pressure system that moved east from the Great Lakes. This low passed north of the region overnight. Unlike the first ice storm of January, the high pressure system was over the New England coastal waters and not in nearby Canada. The combination and movement of both systems brought southeast winds and warmer air into northwest New Jersey. Temperatures both at the surface and aloft rose above freezing by evening.
