THE AIRMASS REMAINS MOIST AND UNSTABLE AHEAD OF A COLD FRONT THAT WAS OVER THE KAUAI CHANNEL LATE IN THE AFTERNOON. AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE PASSING NEAR THE ISLANDS EARLY WEDNESDAY IS EXPECTED TO ENHANCE SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS...AND SO THE RISK FOR EXCESSIVE RAINFALL CONTINUES THROUGH WEDNESDAY. A TROUGH BOTH AT THE SURFACE AND ALOFT WILL LINGER NEAR THE ISLANDS THROUGH THE LATTER HALF OF THIS WEEK...KEEPING THE WEATHER A BIT UNSETTLED. TRADE WINDS WILL FINALLY RETURN TO THE ISLANDS THIS WEEKEND AS HIGH PREESURE PASSES TO OUR NORTH. && .DISCUSSION... THE MAIN PLAYERS IN THE WEATHER FOR THE NEXT 24 HOURS ARE THE COLD FRONT THAT IS OVER THE KAUAI CHANNEL AT MID-AFTERNOON...THE UPPER LEVEL SHORTWAVE NEAR 23N 172W THAT IS MOVING STEADILY EASTWARD... AND THE MOIST AIRMASS OVER THE ISLANDS FROM OAHU TO THE BIG ISLAND. KAUAI IS BEHIND THE FRONT NOW...AND THE AIRMASS THERE SHOULD BECOME DRIER AND MORE STABLE WITH TIME. THUS WE WILL CANCEL THE WATCH FOR KAUAI. THE SHORTWAVE WILL DIG INTO THE BASE OF THE LONGWAVE TROUGH NEAR THE ISLANDS EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING...AND THE MID-LEVELS ARE FORECAST TO COOL A FEW DEGREES FURTHER. THE UPPER LEVEL SHORTWAVE MAY INDUCE A WEAK WAVE OF LOW PRESSURE ALONG THE FRONT. WE ARE STILL EXPECTING THIS SHORTWAVE TO BE THE TRIGGER OVERNIGHT TO HELP REINVIGORATE CONVECTION AROUND THE ISLANDS. SO...FOR THE SMALLER ISLANDS WE WILL ALLOW THE FLASH FLOOD WATCH TO CONTINUE. THE TROUGH IS IN NO HURRY TO LEAVE THE ALOHA STATE. DEEPER MOISTURE WILL LINGER NEAR THE BIG ISLAND...BUT A RELATIVELY DRIER AIRMASS IS EXPECTED TO OVERSPREAD AT LEAST THE WESTERN MAIN ISLANDS FOR WEDNESDAY AND BEYOND AS TRADES TRY TO BUILD IN. BEST RAIN CHANCES WILL REMAIN NEAR THE BIG ISLAND...BUT EVEN THE SMALLER ISLANDS WILL SEE PASSING SHOWERS...SOME COULD BE BRIEFLY HEAVY...WITH THE UPPER TROUGH AND ITS SURFACE REFLECTION NEARBY.
