What happened

The episode as NWS DMX wrote it up.

A very warm and unstable airmass was in place over Iowa. The moisture was in limited supply with this event. A cold front approached the state from the northwest. This front moved into the state during the late afternoon and evening of the 16th. Moisture was limited with this system. Surface dew points were in the mid 50s to around 60 during the early part of the afternoon over the southeast half of the state. The moisture was very shallow. Afternoon mixing lowered dew points into the upper 40s over the southeast, and into the upper 20s and 30s over the northwest just ahead of the front. Temperatures warmed into mid 80s to low 90s which made the airmass quite unstable. CAPE values were around 1000 J/kg with Lifted Indices around -4 C. just ahead of the front. Convection had a hard time getting organized at first with only spotty cells forming ahead of the front. By early evening, a small MCS formed over western Iowa and advanced east-southeast across the state. The MCS produced hail in many locations along with gusty winds. In spite of the "inverted V" type upper air soundings, high winds were not as widespread as would normally be expected. Several locations did report gusts to around 60 MPH. High winds blew a car off of Interstate 80 in Poweshiek County southeast of Malcom. A wind gust of 70 MPH was reported at the Ames Airport in Story County. For the most part, the hail was in the three quarter to one inch diameter size. Hail did cover the ground in Carroll County at Lidderdale. The largest hail report came from Guthrie County north of Panora into the Panora area. Golf ball size hail was reported at that location. There were several reports of gutter damage and dents in car hoods due to the hail in Panora. Overall, damage was limited with this event since tree leaves were only beginning to come out and the crops had not yet been planted.

325 PM CDT FRI APR 16 2004

THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR PORTIONS OF CENTRAL IOWA.

.DAY ONE...TONIGHT

SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE THIS EVENING OVER NORTH
CENTRAL IOWA. MOST OF THESE STORMS SHOULD BE CONFINED TO AREAS
ALONG AND NORTH OF HIGHWAY 20. ANY STORMS THAT DEVELOP SHOULD MOVE
EAST OF MASON CITY AND WATERLOO BETWEEN MIDNIGHT AND 3 AM. THE
STORMS TONIGHT MAY PRODUCE SOME ISOLATED WIND GUSTS OF 60 MPH OR
MORE.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY.

A FRONTAL BOUNDARY WILL SAG SOUTH TO ALONG THE SOUTHERN IOWA BY
MIDDAY SATURDAY. DURING THE LATE AFTERNOON AND EVENING THE FRONT
WILL LIFT BACK NORTH AS A WARM FRONT. THERE STILL IS SOME
UNCERTAINTY AS TO HOW MUCH LOW LEVEL MOISTURE AND INSTABILITY WILL
BE PRESENT OVER THE AREA LATE SATURDAY AFTERNOON. AT THIS TIME IT
APPEARS ENOUGH INSTABILITY WILL BE PRESENT TO ALLOW THUNDERSTORMS TO
DEVELOP LATE SATURDAY EVENING INTO SUNDAY MORNING ALONG AND NORTH OF
THE WARM FRONT. WIND PROFILES WILL BE SUCH THAT SUPERCELL
THUNDERSTORMS MAY DEVELOP AND PERSIST THROUGH THE LATE EVENING AND
VERY EARLY MORNING HOURS. IF ENOUGH LOW LEVEL MOISTURE IS
PRESENT...A SHORT DURATION TIME PERIOD FOR ISOLATED TORNADOES MAY
OCCUR IN THE MID TO LATE SATURDAY EVENING PERIOD. AT THIS TIME IT
APPEARS THUNDERSTORMS WOULD NOT DEVELOP UNTIL AFTER 8 OR 9 PM
SATURDAY EVENING. THE BEST AREA FOR INITIAL DEVELOPMENT WOULD BE
BETWEEN INTERSTATE 80 AND HIGHWAY 30. THE AREA OF STORMS IS EXPECTED
TO FORM INTO A LARGER COMPLEX OF HEAVY RAIN AND THUNDERSTORMS AS IT
MOVES INTO NORTHEAST IOWA OVERNIGHT SATURDAY. BY MIDNIGHT INTO
SUNDAY MORNING THE MAIN THREAT FROM THE STORMS WILL BE LARGE HAIL
AND 60 TO 70 MPH WINDS...ALONG WITH HEAVY RAINFALL. IF LOW LEVEL
MOISTURE AMOUNTS REMAIN LOW ENOUGH SATURDAY AFTERNOON...THE TORNADO
THREAT WILL DIMINISH. ADDITIONAL THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS
CENTRAL IOWA SUNDAY NIGHT. THE MAIN THREAT FROM THESE STORMS WILL BE
STRONG DAMAGING WINDS WITH LARGE HAIL BEING A SECONDARY THREAT.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

SPOTTER ACTIVATION MAY BE NEEDED SATURDAY EVENING THROUGH 3 AM
SUNDAY AND THEN AGAIN SUNDAY EVENING AND NIGHT. COUNTY EMERGENCY
MANAGEMENT SHOULD PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO UPDATED FORECASTS
THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING.
