NWS Honolulu, HI wrote its last area forecast discussion before the first event at Aug 14, 10:00 AM HST, 2 hours earlier.
HAWAIIAN ISLANDS SYNOPTIC DISCUSSION AND GUIDANCE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI 10 AM HST THU AUG 14 2003 SUMMARY...BREEZY TRADE WINDS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE WEEKEND AS THE MAIN HAWAIIAN ISLANDS REMAIN SANDWICHED BETWEEN HIGH PRESSURE TO THE NORTH AND A SERIES OF TROPICAL DISTURBANCES TO THE SOUTH. TRADES WILL DECREASE SLIGHTLY BEGINNING MONDAY. TRADE SHOWERS WILL BE ISOLATED OVER LEEWARD AREAS AND SCATTERED OVER WINDWARD AND MAUKA AREAS TODAY. FEWER SHOWERS ARE EXPECTED FRIDAY AND THEREAFTER. DISCUSSION...THE SUBTROPICAL RIDGE ALONG 34N WILL REMAIN IN PLACE FOR A FEW DAYS BEFORE STRENGTHENING AND RETREATING SLIGHTLY NORTHEASTWARD SUNDAY. AT THE SAME TIME...A SERIES OF WEAK TROPICAL DISTURBANCES WILL ROLL ON WESTWARD TO THE SOUTH OF HAWAII. THE PRESSURE GRADIENT BETWEEN THE HIGH AND THE SERIES OF DISTURBANCES WILL KEEP TRADE WINDS BREEZY ACROSS THE STATE AT LEAST THROUGH SUNDAY. IT SEEMS THAT THE SLIGHT MOVEMENT OF THE HIGH TOWARDS THE NORTHEAST SUNDAY WILL COUNTERACT ITS EXPECTED STRENGTHENING. THEREFORE...TRADE WINDS WILL DECREASE INTO THE 10 TO 20 MPH RANGE BEGINNING MONDAY IN RESPONSE TO THE SLIGHT WEAKENING OF THE PRESSURE GRADIENT. AFTER THAT...WINDS WILL CONTINUE IN THIS SPEED RANGE THROUGH THE REST OF THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS. SATELLITE LOOPS SHOW BROKEN TO OVERCAST LOW CLOUDS SOUTH OF 22N BETWEEN THE MAIN HAWAIIAN ISLANDS AND 135W. THESE CLOUDS APPEAR TO BE RATHER STABLE...WITH UNIFORMLY WARM CLOUD TOPS NOTED IN INFRARED IMAGERY. THESE CLOUDS WILL BLOCK THE SUN OVER WINDWARD AND MAUKA AREAS OF THE ISLANDS FOR MUCH OF THE FORECAST PERIOD. SHOWERS WILL BE SCATTERED OVER WINDWARD AND MAUKA AREAS OF THE SMALLER ISLANDS TODAY...WITH FEWER SHOWERS EXPECTED TOMORROW AND THEREAFTER. LEEWARD AREAS WILL BE CLEARER AND DRIER...ALTHOUGH THE BREEZY TRADES MAY PUSH A SHOWER OR TWO ACROSS LEEWARD AREAS FROM TIME TO TIME. .HFO...WARNINGS.....NONE . WATCHES......NONE . ADVISORIES...SMALL CRAFT POWELL
