UTAH AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SALT LAKE CITY UT
1030 AM MDT SAT JUN 1 2002

.SYNOPSIS...A COLD FRONT ACROSS THE NORTHWEST UTAH THIS MORNING WILL
STALL OVER THE CENTRAL PART OF THE STATE BY THIS AFTERNOON. IT WILL
THEN PUSH ACROSS THE REMAINDER OF THE AREA MONDAY AS ANOTHER UPPER
LEVEL TROUGH MOVES PAST THE AREA.

.DISCUSSION...SHALLOW SURFACE COLD FRONT HAS MADE IT THROUGH MOST OF
WESTERN UT BUT THE MORE SIGNIFICANT FRONT ALOFT CLEARLY DEFINED BY
BAND OF CONVECTION EXTENDING FROM JUST WEST OF EVW TO JUST SOUTH OF
DPG. THAT BAND HAS BEEN PUSHED BY A WELL DEFINED SHORTWAVE OVER
NORTHEAST NV THAT IS MOVING SLOWLY EAST-NORTHEAST. THAT WAVE SHOULD
TURN MORE NORTHERLY AND SHEAR AS IT TRIES TO MOVE INTO THE RIDGE
OVER THE HIGH PLAINS. A SECOND SHORTWAVE IS OFF THE SOUTHERN CA
COAST AND FORECAST TO MOVE NORTHEAST TOWARD SOUTH-CENTRAL UT BY
MIDNIGHT TONIGHT. YET A THIRD SHORTWAVE IS ON THE COAST NEAR THE
CA/OR BORDER AND FORECAST TO MOVE OVER NORTHERN UT EARLY MONDAY.

THE ELEVATED FRONT ISNT GOING TO GO TOO MUCH FURTHER IN WESTER UT
BECAUSE OF BACKING AHEAD OF THE SOUTHERN CA SHORTWAVE. THE NORTHERN
PORTION WILL ALSO TEND TO STALL SOON. IN ADDITION TO THE LOW LEVEL
CONVERGENCE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS BOUNDARY A STRONG AREA OF
DIVERGENCE DEVELOPS AT JET LEVEL TOWARD EVENING IN AN AREA COUPLED
BETWEEN THE ENTRANCE REGION OF A JET ASSOCIATED WITH THE FIRST WAVE
THAT WILL BE OVER WY BY THEN AND THE EXIT REGION OF A JET ASSOCIATED
WITH THE SOUTHERN CA WAVE. RESULT SHOULD BE A NICE ENHANCEMENT OF
CONVECTION ALONG THE ELEVATED FRONT THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING.

THE WHOLE COMPLEX SHIFTS SOUTH AND EAST MONDAY AS THE THE MAIN TROF
AXIS MOVES PAST THE AREA.
