UTAH AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SALT LAKE CITY UT
1014 AM MDT THU JUL 18 2002

.SYNOPSIS...A LIGHT SOUTHERLY FLOW ALOFT WILL KEEP A MOIST AND
UNSTABLE AIRMASS OVER THE AREA THROUGH TONIGHT. DRIER AND MORE
STABLE AIR WILL MOVE IN FROM THE SOUTHWEST STARTING FRIDAY.

.DISCUSSION...UPPER LOW WRAPPING UP OVER THE SIERRAS. WITH THE HIGH
CENTERED OVER COLORADO...MOISTURE CONTINUES TO MOVE INTO THE FORECAST
AREA FROM THE SOUTH. A WAVE IS MOVING UP OUT AHEAD OF THE LOW
EXTENDING FROM NORTH-CENTRAL NEVADA INTO NORTHWEST UTAH STRETCHING
INTO SOUTH CENTRAL UTAH. SOME ORGANIZED CONVECTION PRESENT WITH
THIS FEATURE OVER NORTHWEST UTAH THIS MORNING. EVEN THOUGH SOME
DRYING APPARENT IN THE WATER VAPOR IMAGERY ACROSS THE SOUTHWEST...PW
VALUES STILL ABOVE .75 THERE. AFTERNOON DIFFERENTIAL HEATING WILL
SPARK SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS THIS AFTERNOON IN AREAS
FREE OF CLOUDS THIS MORNING. SOME COLD AIR ALOFT HAS WORKED INTO THE
WESTERN DESERTS THIS MORNING AS WELL. THIS SHOULD HELP TO DESTABILIZE
THE AIR MASS AND BRING MORE WIDESPREAD CONVECTION THIS AFTERNOON AND
EVENING. EXPECT THE COLD AIR WILL ALSO KEEP CONVECTION GOING A LITTLE
LONGER THROUGH THE NIGHT THAN THE PAST COUPLE NIGHTS.

SCATTERED POPS AND CLOUD COVER ALL HANDLED WELL THIS MORNING AND NO
UPDATES PLANNED.

LOW TO LIFT ACROSS NEVADA TOMORROW AND THROUGH IDAHO SATURDAY. FOR
FRIDAY...COLD POCKET TO MOVE ACROSS NORTHERN NEVADA INTO NORTHWEST
UTAH. CONVECTION SHOULD BE A BIT MORE ORGANIZED WITH THIS COOLING.
SOME DRYING TO START ACROSS THE SOUTHWEST. SOME WARMING ALOFT TO
MOVE IN AT THIS TIME AS WELL BRINGING A LESSENED CHANCE OF CONVECTIVE
ACTIVITY. THIS DRYING AND STABILIZATION TO SPREAD NORTH AND EAST
AS THE LOW LIFTS THROUGH IDAHO SATURDAY. ENOUGH INSTABILITY AND
MOISTURE ASSOCIATED WITH THE LOW FOR WIDELY SCATTERED TO SCATTERED
SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS SATURDAY IN THE NORTHERN ZONES. ISOLATED
ACTIVITY WILL REMAIN OVER THE SOUTHERN MOUNTAINS.
