SOUTH PLAINS AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LUBBOCK TX 220 PM CDT THU JUL 11 2002 SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWS A WEAK TROUGH AXIS LOCATED OVER THE SOUTHERN PORTION OF THE FORECAST AREA EXTENDING EASTWARD TO A LOW EAST OF WICHITA FALLS. LOW LEVEL CONVERGENCE AND DAYTIME HEATING HAS RESULTED IN CONVECTION FORMING ALONG THIS WEAK BOUNDARY. ANOTHER AREA OF CONVECTION WAS LOCATED OVER THE SOUTHERN PANHANDLE IN ADVANCE OF A MESOSCALE CONVECTIVELY INDUCED VORTICITY MAXIMUM NEAR AMARILLO. WILL CONTINUE HIGH CHANCE POPS FOR THE AREA TONIGHT AS STORMS DRIFT TO THE SOUTHWEST. THE UPPER LOW OVER WESTERN IOWA WILL MOVE SOUTHWARD INTO WESTERN MISSOURI FRIDAY WITH THE UPPER RIDGE ANCHORED OVER THE ROCKIES. A WEAK COLD FRONT WAS LOCATED OVER SOUTHWEST KANSAS/SOUTHEAST COLORADO THIS AFTERNOON. THIS BOUNDARY WILL MOVE SOUTH INTO THE FORECAST AREA FRIDAY TO PROVIDE A FOCUS FOR SCATTERED THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT WHICH WILL PERSIST INTO THE EVENING HOURS. MODELS DEPICT DRIER AIR/SUBSIDENCE WORKING INTO THE AREA SATURDAY SO WILL CONTINUE WITH NO POP FORECAST SATURDAY EXCEPT FOR THE SOUTHEAST COUNTIES.
