DEEP SOUTH TEXAS FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BROWNSVILLE TX
940 PM CDT SUN JUN 30 2002

SHORT TERM...MAIN CONCERN OF THE NIGHT IS THE INCREASING CONV JUST
SOUTH OF THE BORDER. THIS ACTIVITY IS APPARENTLY FIRING ALONG A
NARROW LOBE OF 5H VORTICITY EXTENDING SOUTHWARDS FROM THE
QUASI-STATIONARY 5H TROUGH POSITIONED OVER NORTHEAST MEXICO/SOUTHERN
AND CENTRAL TEXAS. THE MESO-ETA KEEPS THIS VORT LOBE POSITIONED
OVER THE EASTERN PORTIONS OF DEEP SOUTH TEXAS TONIGHT AND EARLY
MONDAY WHICH WILL MAINTAIN THE CONV POTENTIAL OVER THE REGION IN THE
SHORT TERM. PLENTY OF DEEP TROPICAL MOISTURE REMAINS IN PLACE OVER
THE BRO CWA WITH THE CRP AND BRO SOUNDINGS REPORTING PWATS IN EXCESS
OF 2 INCHES. PORTIONS OF THE BRO CWA ARE OUTLINED IN THE LATEST
EXCESSIVE RAIN OUTLOOK FROM HPC (REF QPFERD DISC) HIGHLIGHTING THE
POTENTIAL FOR RAINS IN THE 2 TO 3 INCH RANGE. IN ADDITION...CLD TOP
TEMPS AND LIGHTNING ACTIVITY INDICATE THAT THE CONV TO THE SOUTH OF
THE CWA IS NOT WEAKENING AND WILL PUSH INTO THE CWA DURING THE NEXT
COUPLE OF HOURS. SO WILL ISSUE A FLASH FLOOD WATCH FOR THE EASTERN
PORTIONS OF THE BRO CWA TONIGHT.

THE REST OF THE CWA WORDING LOOKS OK.

MARINE...THE SURFACE GRADIENT FLOW OFFSHORE HAS DIMINISHED SOMEWHAT
AND IS BELOW SCA LEVELS ATTM. WWIII GUIDANCE SLOWLY DIMINISHES WIND
AND SWELL ACTIVITY OFFSHORE THROUGH THE NIGHT AND SO NOW REASON TO
DISAGREE WITH THIS TREND AS MESO-ETA MSL FIELDS WEAKEN BY 12Z
MONDAY. SO WILL LOWER THE SCA OFFSHORE AND WILL MENTION SCEC
CONDITIONS.

HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BROWNSVILLE TX
900 PM CDT SUN JUN 30 2002

...LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL POSSIBLE ACROSS DEEP SOUTH TEXAS TONIGHT...

AN UPPER LEVEL LOW PRESSURE AREA CENTERED NEAR THE LAREDO AREA THIS
EVENING CONTINUES TO BRING WARM AND MOIST TROPICAL AIR OVER DEEP SOUTH
TEXAS FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO. THIS LOW PRESSURE AREA WILL LINGER OVER
SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL TEXAS TONIGHT AND MONDAY PROVIDING THE LIFT TO
GENERATE ADDITIONAL SHOWER AND THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY TONIGHT AND
MONDAY OVER THE AREA.

ALTHOUGH NO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TONIGHT...ISOLATED STRONG
THUNDERSTORMS WILL PRODUCE LOCALIZED TORRENTIAL RAINS...OCCASIONAL
LIGHTNING AND BRIEF WIND GUSTS FROM 20 TO 30 MPH. THE STRONGEST OF THE
THUNDERSTORMS THAT FORM WILL HAVE THE POTENTIAL OF PRODUCING RAINFALL
TOTALS FROM 1 TO 3 INCHES TONIGHT ACROSS PORTIONS OF DEEP SOUTH TEXAS.

BE AWARE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF PONDING OF WATER ON AREA ROADWAYS
TONIGHT. AS ALWAYS...NEVER DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO WATERS OF UNKNOWN
DEPTH. FIND AN ALTERNATE ROUTE...AND DRIVE ACCORDING TO WEATHER
CONDITIONS. VISIBILITIES DURING HEAVY RAIN CAN DROP TO NEAR ZERO.
