NORTHERN GREAT BASIN FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ELKO NV
215 PM PDT SUN SEP 15 2002

SYNOPSIS...A PACIFIC WEATHER SYSTEM WILL BRING WIND AND A CHANCE OF
SHOWERS TO NORTHERN NEVADA TONIGHT AND MONDAY MORNING. THEN MOSTLY
DRY AND MILD WEATHER WILL PREVAIL THROUGH NEXT WEEKEND.

DISCUSSION...AVN IS THE MODEL OF CHOICE DUE TO BEST INITIALIZATION
OF THE 5H TROF OFF THE WEST COAST. IT BRINGS A 5H CLOSED LOW TO THE
NRN CA COAST BY 00Z THIS AFTERNON...AND TO LOVELOCK BY 12Z MONDAY
MORNING AND THEN MOVES THE TROF EAST OF NEVADA BY 00Z MONDAY
AFTERNOON. TROF POSITION IS A BIT FURTHER SOUTH THAN PREVIOUS
RUNS...SO HAVE INCREASED POPS TONIGHT AND MONDAY AND ADDED 10 PERCENT
POPS TO SOUTHERN ZONES TONIGHT. THOUGH 5H WINDS TONIGHT ARE OVER 50
KTS WITH A STRONG VORT MAX MOVING THROUGH...WE WOULD NORMALLY
DECOUPLE ENOUGH TO KEEP LOWER LEVEL WINDS BELOW WIND ADVISORY
CRITERIA. WILL KEEP THE RED FLAG WARNING FOR THE SOUTH AND NORTHWEST
CWA UNTIL THIS EVENING. LITTLE CHANGE IN TEMPS FROM PREVIOUS PACKAGE
WITH MONDAY NIGHT BEING THE COLDEST NIGHT. SOME LOWS MAY DIP BELOW
FREEZING IN PLACES THAT HAVE NOT DONE SO THIS FALL. A WEAK INSIDE
SLIDER MAY BRING A SHOWER TO THE FAR NORTH TUESDAY...OTHERWISE A
DRY FORECAST AFTER MONDAY. THE 12Z AVN DROPS 5H HGTS AT LEAST 100
METERS LOWER THAN LAST NIGHTS MRF BY FRIDAY MORNING. WILL ASSUME
COOLER NORTHWEST FLOW OVER THE CWA AND KEEP TEMPS DOWN A BIT IN THE
EXTENDED. NEYMAN

.EKO...FIRE WEATHER WATCH UPGRADED TO RED FLAG WARNING ZONES
451...455 AND 457 FOR WIND GUSTS AND LOW FUEL MOISTURE THIS AFTERNOON
AND EVENING.
