MOJAVE DESERT/SOUTHERN GREAT BASIN AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LAS VEGAS NV
255 PM PDT WED JUL 24 2002

.SYNOPSIS...MONSOONAL MOISTURE WILL REMAIN OVER SOUTHERN NEVADA AND
NORTHWEST ARIZONA INTO FRIDAY KEEPING THE THREAT OF SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS. AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE OFF THE CALIFORNIA COAST WILL
BEGIN TO PUSH THE MOISTURE EAST OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS AS A DRIER
SOUTHWEST FLOW DEVELOPS OVER THE AREA.

.DISCUSSION...SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS HAVE DEVELOPED THIS
AFTERNOON OVER MUCH OF THE SOUTHERN CWA WITH LOCAL SPOTTERS
REPORTING HEAVY RAIN IN A FEW AREAS. THUNDERSTORMS HAVE BEEN SLOWLY
DECREASING OVER THE PAST HOUR...BUT EXPECT THESE TO START UP AGAIN
LATER THIS AFTERNOON...ESPECIALLY IN AREAS WITH PLENTY OF SUN.
DEWPOINTS HAVE BEEN RISING THIS AFTERNOON WITH LAS REPORTING A
DEWPOINT OF 69 DEG F. THE ATMOSPHERE ACROSS THE SOUTHERN CWA IS
UNSTABLE WITH LIS AROUND -5/-8 AND HIGH CAPE VALUES OVER 2000 J/KG.
A FAIRLY STRONG VORT MAX IS ALSO ROTATING THROUGH SOUTHEAST
CALIFORNIA WHICH IS HELPING TO PRODUCE THUNDERSTORMS OVER THIS
REGION. THE MAIN FACTOR THAT HAS INHIBITED THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT
OVER CENTRAL CLARK COUNTY HAS BEEN THE AMOUNT OF CLOUD COVER.
CURRENT SATELLITE PICS SHOW SOME DISSIPATION OF THE CLOUDS AND IF
THIS CONTINUES...THUNDERSTORMS WILL ONCE AGAIN FIRE UP. FOR THIS
REASON...WILL GO AHEAD AND KEEP THE FLASH FLOOD WATCH UP UNTIL 900
PM. THESE DYNAMICS WILL CONTINUE OVERNIGHT AS THE VORT TRACKS
NORTHEAST THROUGH CLARK AND MOHAVE COUNTIES. THE MODELS ALSO KEEP
THE LOWER LIS ALONG WITH STRONG THETA-E AND OMEGA OVERNIGHT. WILL
GO AHEAD AND KEEP MENTION OF THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUING THROUGH THE
NIGHT. TROUGH OFF THE CA COAST WILL APPROACH THE AREA FRIDAY AND
BRING A SOUTHWEST FLOW INTO THE AREA. THIS WILL HELP TO PUSH
MOISTURE INTO EASTERN AREAS OF THE CWA. AGAIN...ATMOSPHERE WILL BE
UNSTABLE AND WILL GO AHEAD AND KEEP MENTION OF THUNDERSTORMS OVER
THE EASTERN AREAS OF THE CWA...ESPECIALLY NORTHWEST ARIZONA. BY
FRIDAY THERE SHOULD BE ENOUGH OF A SOUTHWEST FLOW TO PUSH MUCH OF
THE MOISTURE EAST OF THE CWA...BUT WILL GO AHEAD AND LINGER A SLIGHT
CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS FOR THE FAR EASTERN ZONES.

IN THE EXTENDED...MODELS KEEP THE DRY SOUTHWEST FLOW OVER THE AREA
AND HAVE GONE AHEAD AND KEPT THE EXTENDED PART OF THE FORECAST DRY.
A CONCERN WILL BE WITH HURRICANE ELIDA OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS.
MODELS SHOW THIS STORM TO TRACK NORTHWEST AND POSSIBLE GET DRAWN
INTO THE SOUTHWEST FLOW. THIS WOULD DRASTICALLY CHANGE THE FORECAST
BY EARLY NEXT WEEK...BUT AS OF NOW...WILL KEEP THINGS DRY.

.LAS...FLASH FLOOD WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED UNTIL 900 PM THIS EVENING
FOR MOHAVE COUNTY ARIZONA...CLARK...AND SOUTHERN NYE COUNTIES IN
NEVADA. PLEASE SEE THE LATEST RNOFFAVEF FOR FURTHER DETAILS.
