AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION FOR WESTERN SD AND NORTHEASTERN WY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RAPID CITY SD 300 PM MDT MON JUN 4 2001 LATEST SFC ANALYSIS PLACES LOW OVER CENT CO WITH AN INVERTED TROF EXTENDING N THROUGH ERN WY. MUCH DRIER AIR NOTED BEHIND THIS TROF.. WITH A 20F DEW POINT CHANGE FM NE WY TO WRN WY. AREA RADARS INDC BROAD AREA OF PRECIP ALONG AND E OF THIS TROF WHICH IS INCREASING INTENSITY AND AREAL COVERAGE. IR IMAGES SHOW COOLING CLOUD TOPS FM SE WY INTO SW SD. LIGHTNING ACTIVITY IS INCREASING OVER NEB PANHANDLE. MODELS INITIALIZED WELL AND SHOW PRETTY GOOD AGREEMENT OVER MUCH OF U.S. CLOSED LOW OVER MT/WY CAN BE SEEN OPENING UP AND WEAKENING IN WV IMAGES...AS PROGGED. OF COURSE SHOULD GET ONE LAST PUSH OF ROBUST SYNOPTIC LIFT...MAINLY THIS EVENING...BEFORE THIS LOW FINALLY WEAKENS AND SHEARS OUT AS UPPER FLOW BECOMES ZONAL. S/WV MOVING AROUND THIS LOW IS RESPONSIBLE FOR A GOOD BIT OF PVA AND ISENTROPIC LIFT OVER CWFA ATTM THROUGH THE EVE HOURS. WITH A SATURATED ATMO THROUGH THE LOWEST 8KM...RAIN IS A SURE BET OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS. MODEST CAPE OVER CWFA...HOWEVER 500-1000 J/KG EXPECTED JUST S OF CWFA. MILDLY STEEP LAPSE RATES OVER CWFA. OCCASIONAL WEAK THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE THIS EVE MAINLY WRN AND SRN MOST ZONES. GOOD DRYING OVER CWFA FM W TO E AFT 03Z AS SFC TO 850 LAYER IS FAIRLY DRY BEHIND TROF. SHOULD SEE NEARLY STEADY TEMPERATURES THROUGH THE NIGHT...ONLY DIPPING A FEW DEGREES AFTER MIDNIGHT. THICK MID AND HIGH CLOUD DECK AND COOLER/DRYER AIR MOVING OVER WET GROUND WILL ALLOW PATCHY FOG TO DEVELOP. ATMO SLOWLY DRIES OVER NEXT COUPLE DAYS. DEEPER MOISTURE REMAINS TO N AND E OF CWFA...AND SOME PRECIP MAY BE SEEN THROUGH TUESDAY IN EXTREME NRN AND ERN ZONES. WILL ANTICIPATE DRYING ATMO TUE...HOWEVER ROBUST EVAP OF PLENTIFUL GROUND MOISTURE COMBINED WITH LINGERING MID LEVEL MOISTURE WILL ALLOW SOME CU DEVELOP TUE AFTERNOON. THESE CLOUDS COMBINED WITH HIGH CLOUDS WILL LIMIT HIGH TEMPS TUE. GUIDANCE POPS AND TEMPS LOOK REASONABLE AND HAVE CHANGED VERY LITTLE...ONLY MAKING CHANGES PER ABOVE. WED INTO EXTENDED PERIODS WILL SEE ZONAL FLOW GIVE WAY TO UPPER LEVEL RIDGING OVER WRN U.S. RIDGE BUILD OVER ROCKIES THROUGH THE WEEKEND WITH A FEW SHORTWAVES MOVING OVER THE RIDGE DAYS 5-7 SUPPORTING DIURNAL CONVECTION. TEMPS SHOULD WARM TO AROUND NORMAL OR SLIGHTLY ABOVE. GUIDANCE HAS A GOOD HANDLE ON THIS AND HAVE N'T CHANGED MUCH. .UNR...NONE. 99
