Beneficial rains fell across portions of Deep South Texas, especially during the early and middle parts of the month. However, these rains were neither widespread nor frequent enough to replenish subsoil moisture. Therefore, Deep South Texas continues in a moderate to severe drought. As of the end of June, Amistad reservoir contained only 34 percent of its storage capacity, and Falcon reservoir held only 10 percent of its storage capacity. Since both of these reservoirs are the primary sources of water for the Rio Grande Valley, their storage levels remain a serious concern. Following are some rainfall departures through the end of June: Brownsville reported 4.31 inches below normal, Harlingen reported 3.21 inches below normal, McAllen reported 1.97 inches below normal, and Mercedes reported 2.10 inches below normal.
