Area forecast discussion, Feb 28, 3:00 AM CST, 3 hours 30 minutes before
SOUTHEAST TEXAS AND SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LAKE CHARLES LA
300 AM CST WED FEB 28 2001

A COLD FRONT IS SLOWLY MOVING SOUTHEAST JUST OVER THE CENTRAL PORTION OF
LOUISIANA THIS MORNING CAUSING A MAJORITY OF THE SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS JUST NORTH OF THE CWA. THE FRONT SHOULD SLOWLY SAG
SOUTH CAUSING SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TO INCREASE THE NEXT COUPLE
OF DAYS. DENSE FOG HAS FORMED AND IS PRETTY MUCH SOUTH OF THE COLD
FRONT WHICH IS IN THE NORTHERN PORTION OF THE CWA...THEREFORE WILL
CONTINUE THE DENSE FOG ADVISORY BUT FOR ONLY THE SOUTHERN TWO-THIRDS
OF THE CWA UNTIL MID MORNING. THE LCH SOUNDING LAST NIGHT INDICATED
A PWAT OF 1.34 AND A K-INDEX OF 23...WHICH INDICATES THE AIRMASS IS
BECOMING MORE MOIST AND UNSTABLE. THE LIFTED INDEX IS A -2.2 WITH A
CAPE OF 1865 J/KG INDICATING THE AIRMASS IS UNSTABLE BUT NOT AT A
POINT OF WIDESPREAD SEVERE WEATHER. ISOLATED INCIDENCE OF SEVERE
WEATHER COULD DEVELOP LATER TODAY. TEMPERATURES WILL CONTINUE TO BE
NEAR NORMAL TO SLIGHTLY ABOVE WITH A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF
CLOUDINESS EXPECTED. THE FRONT SHOULD SAG FAR ENOUGH SOUTH ON
THURSDAY TO INCREASE THE CHANCE FOR SHOWERS EVEN MORE. WINDS WILL
BE GENERALLY LIGHT WITH THE FRONT IN THE VICINITY OF SOUTH
LOUISIANA.

MARINE...BOY035 SHOWED A WIND FROM THE EAST AT 6 KNOTS WITH 2 FOOT
SEAS. VERY LITTLE CHANGE IN THE WIND AND SEAS FOR THE NEXT FEW
DAYS. A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL MOVE THROUGH THE AREA ON SATURDAY
CAUSING POSSIBLE SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY WINDS IN ITS WAKE.

LONG TERM...MOISTURE WILL EVEN BE MORE FRIDAY AND SATURDAY AHEAD OF A
STRONG COLD FRONT THAT WILL TRACK THROUGH THE AREA ON SATURDAY. A
GOOD POSSIBILITY OF SEVERE WEATHER AS THE POLAR AND SUB-TROPICAL JET
BOTH CONVERGE OVER THE AREA DURING THE WEEKEND. A CONSIDERABLE
AMOUNT OF DRYING WILL TAKE PLACE BY LATE IN THE WEEKEND CAUSING
SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TO END AT THAT TIME.
