Area forecast discussion, Feb 15, 3:30 PM CST, 5 hours 10 minutes before
SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AUSTIN/SAN ANTONIO TX
330 PM CST THU FEB 15 2001

SEVERE WEATHER AND HEAVY RAIN EVENT CONTINUES TO LOOK PROMISING FOR
TONIGHT. BASED ON LATEST SATELLITE SCANS, SEVERE WEATHER/SUPERCELL
THREAT APPEARS GREATEST OVER THE WESTERN HILL COUNTRY AND AREAS
SOUTHWEST OF SAT WHERE LOW CLOUD COVER CONTINUES TO BREAK APART.
HELICITIES, SHOWALTER INDEX AND CAPES ARE STILL FORECAST BY MESO-ETA
TO BE HIGHEST WEST OF SAT. PRECIPITABLE WATER VALUES WILL BE
SUFFICIENT FOR FLASH FLOODING, BUT FEEL THAT STEERING WINDS WILL
KEEP STORM CELLS MOVING FAST ENOUGH TO PREVENT A WIDESPREAD EVENT.
BELIEVE THE SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS EVOLVE INTO A SQUALL LINE ALONG
THE FRONT AS THE FRONT PASSES SOUTH AND EAST OF THE BALCONES
ESCARPMENT WHERE SOILS HAVE THE ABILITY TO HOLD MORE WATER. THUS
WILL NOT ISSUE A FLASH FLOOD WATCH BUT CONTINUE MENTION OF LOCALLY
HEAVY RAINFALL.

IN THE PAST UPDATE, POPS WERE TRIMMED BACK FOR FRIDAY AS STRONG
CONVECTION WILL LIKELY RESULT IN SINKING OF AIR IN ITS WAKE.
WRAPAROUND CLOUDS AND NORTH WINDS SHOULD KEEP THE AUSTIN AREA MUCH
COOLER THAN GUIDANCE FRIDAY. WILL UNDERCUT TEMPS FOR THE FIRST 3
PERIODS AND FAVOR MAV GUIDANCE WINDS BEHIND THE STRONG VORTICITY
MAXIMUM. GRAPHIC OUTPUT FOR WEDNESDAY BY MRF SUGGESTS LIGHT RAIN,
BUT WILL NOT MENTION BASED ON JUST ONE MODEL RUN AS GUIDANCE POPS
REMAIN LOW.
