WEST CENTRAL TEXAS FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN ANGELO TX
317 PM CDT TUE AUG 28 2001

LATEST WATER VAPOR IMAGERY SHOWS THE SOUTHWEST TO NORTHEAST ORIENTATION
OF THE MID/UPPER LEVEL SHEAR AXIS OVER WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. IMPRESSIVE
MOISTURE STREAM IS IN PLACE ACROSS THE FAR WESTERN GULF AND EXTENDS
NORTHWARD INTO CENTRAL AND EAST TX.

THE FORECAST WILL HINGE ON THE MOVEMENT...OR LACK THEREOF...OF THE SHEAR
AXIS. IT APPEARS THAT A STRONG UPPER LEVEL SYSTEM WILL BEGIN TO DIG TO
THE SOUTH OF ALASKA ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT. THIS SHOULD ACT TO EVENTUALLY
MOVE THIS SYSTEM TO THE EAST BUT I DO NOT EXPECT THE MOVEMENT TO BE
RAPID. IT LOOKS AS THOUGH THE AXIS WILL REMAIN IN A FAVORABLE POSITION
FOR PRECIP UNTIL LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT. IN FACT...THE STACKING OF THE 500
AND 700 TROUGHS LOOKS IMPRESSIVE FOR THE UPCOMING OVERNIGHT AND INTO
WEDNESDAY MORNING.

WITH PWAT VALUES OF AROUND 1.5 INCHES EXPECTED THROUGH THURSDAY...WILL
ISSUE A FLASH FLOOD WATCH FOR THE SOUTH HALF OF THE CWA. THE RAINFALL
WILL LIKELY BE HEAVIEST OVER SOUTHEASTERN ZONES WITH LESSER AMOUNTS
FURTHER TO THE NORTHWEST. HOWEVER...WITH THE DEGREE OF SATURATION THAT IS
IN PLACE...RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 1/2 INCH OR SO COULD CREATE PROBLEMS OVER
WESTERN PORTIONS OF THE WATCH AREA.

WILL KEEP THE HIGHEST POPS OVER THE SOUTHEAST TONIGHT AND BEGIN TO CUT
BACK ON POPS ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO THURSDAY. CLOUD COVER TO PERSIST
THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT SO WILL CONTINUE WITH BELOW NORMAL AFTERNOON
TEMPS.

IN THE EXTENDED...UPPER FLOW WILL FLATTEN A BIT AS MORE OF A WEST TO
NORTHWEST FLOW ALOFT TAKES SHAPE. PIECES OF ENERGY STILL LOOK AS THOUGH
THEY MAY BRING A SLIGHT CHANCE OF PRECIP ON SATURDAY. TEMPS TO REBOUND A
BIT WITH HIGHS RETURNING TO THE 90 DEGREE LEVEL THROUGH THE WEEKEND.
