THE SUBTROPICAL HIGH CENTERED OVER ARKANSAS THIS MORNING IS FORECAST
TO STRENGTHEN SLIGHTLY AND MOVE TO A POSITION NEAR THE OKLAHOMA
PANHANDLE BY THURSDAY AND REMAIN THERE THROUGH THE WEEKEND. WITH
THE HIGH MORE DIRECTLY OVER THIS AREA...EXPECT THE ATMOSPHERE TO BE
A LITTLE DRIER AND TEMPERATURES TO BE A COUPLE DEGREES WARMER.
PRECIPITATION CHANCES SHOULD BE NIL.
IN THE LONGER TERM AS WE MOVE INTO NEXT WEEK...THE MODELS HINT AT
THE UPPER HIGH DRIFTING NORTH ALLOWING A DEEPER EASTERLY FLOW TO
PULL A LITTLE MORE MOISTURE INTO THE AREA. WHILE THIS IS NOT A WET
PATTERN FOR WEST TEXAS...IT SHOULD ALLOW TEMPERATURES TO FALL
SLIGHTLY CLOSER TO SEASONAL NORMALS AND POSSIBLY ALLOW ISOLATED
THUNDERSTORMS TO RETURN TO THE AREA.

The long-term drought that redeveloped across the South Plains, extreme southern Panhandle and Rolling Plains early this summer eased slightly during the month of August as thunderstorms brought much needed precipitation to the region on several occasions during the month. This rainfall was, however, very spotty in nature and thus most locations experienced another month with below normal precipitation amounts and above normal temperatures. These conditions combined to maintain fairly dry soil moisture conditions and dryland crops continued to suffer.More details, including rough estimates of crop damage, will be included in later months after the extent of the drought is better determined.
