SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWS CLEAR SKIES OVER THE FORECAST AREA WITH WATER
VAPOR IMAGES INDICATING DRY SOUTHWEST FLOW...WITH MONSOONAL MOISTURE
ONLY SLOWLY CREEPING NORTHWARD ALONG THE MEXICAN BORDER. TO THE NORTH...
THE SOUTHWARD "SAG" OF THE TROUGH HAS STOPPED AROUND THE BAY AREA AND IT
APPEARS THE TROUGH IS BEGINNING TO LIFT NORTHWARD IN RESPONSE THE
STRENGTHENING RIDGE OVER THE DESERT SOUTHWEST. TEMPERATURES AS EXPECTED
HAVE WARMED UP OVER THE ENTIRE AREA. BIG TRICK IN THIS FORECAST
PACKAGE IS THE ONSET OF THE CONVECTIVE THREAT FOR THE KERN
DESERTS/MOUNTAINS AND THE SOUTHERN SIERRA. THE LATEST AVN MODEL IS VERY
AGGRESSIVE IN SURGING MOISTURE NORTHWESTWARD INTO THESE AREAS AS EARLY
AS THURSDAY AFTERNOON...WHILE THE ETA IS SLOWER AND WEAKER WITH THE
FETCH. IT APPEARS BASED ON THE CURRENT SITUATION THAT THE ETA HAS THE
RIGHT IDEA...BUT WITH TIME THE AVN SOLUTION MAY PAN OUT. PER
COORDINATION...WILL OPT TO KEEP MENTION OF THUNDER IN ZONES 98/99...95
AND 97 ON THURSDAY...ALTHOUGH IT APPEARS THE GREATER THREAT WILL BE ON
FRIDAY AS SOUTHERLY FLOW ALOFT WILL BE ABLE TO TRANSPORT MORE MOISTURE
INTO THE AREA. TEMPERATURES WILL RISE ANOTHER COUPLE OF DEGREES ON
THURSDAY AND FRIDAY AS THE RIDGE STRENGTHENS.

IN THE EXTENDED FORECAST...MODELS AT THIS TIME BRINGING A TROUGH
ALONG THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COAST AND WITH INCREASED SOUTHWEST FLOW
ALOFT...MUCH OF THE MONSOONAL MOISTURE SHOULD BE SWEPT EAST OF THE
AREA. CURRENT EXTENDED FORECAST HAS THE WEEKEND DRY AND THIS SEEMS
FINE. WITH ALL APPROACHING TROUGHS...THE PROSPECTS OF A MARINE
ENHANCED COOLDOWN IN THE SJV IS ALWAYS A POSSIBILITY. AT THIS TIME...IT
LOOKS LIKE MOST OF THE TROUGH ENERGY WILL BE NORTH OF THE AREA AND
ONLY LIMITED COOLING WILL OCCUR INTO MERCED COUNTY. BY MONDAY...ALL
MEDIUM RANGE MODELS AGREE IN BUILDING A VERY STRONG (6010) METER 500
MILLIBAR HIGH OVER THE SOUTHERN ROCKIES...WITH SOUTHEAST FLOW ALOFT
INTO THE AREA. WITH THIS SCENARIO...AREA SHOULD BE HOT...WITH DAILY
CHANCES OF THUNDERSTORMS OVER THE SIERRA AND KERN DESERTS/MOUNTAUINS
THROUGH WEDNESDAY.

The Hoover Complex Fire started by lightning on July 13, 2001, burned through August, and was still burning toward the end of September. The first spot forecast was received on August 8th and the fire burned about 8040 acres. The fire was shifted as a resource benefit during late August. There were no fatalities, injuries, or structures lost. Cost to contain estimated at $777.8K by 9/21/01.
