NORTHEAST OREGON/SOUTHEAST WASHINGTON FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PENDLETON OR 200 PM PDT SAT AUG 4 2001 A SHORT WAVE WEATHER DISTURBANCE HAS ROTATED AROUND THE BOTTOM OF A BROAD UPPER TROUGH AXIS THAT IS NOW MOVING ONTO THE OREGON AND WASHINGTON COAST. IT IS NOW MOVING UP ALONG A SURFACE COLD FRONT OVER EASTERN OREGON. THIS WAVE HAS DEVELOPED INTO A COMMA HEAD AS SEEN ON THE SATELLITE AND IT IS BUMPING INTO UNSTABLE AIR WITH A DECENT THETA-E RIDGE OVER NORTHEAST OREGON. AS A RESULT SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WITH NUMEROUS LIGHTNING STRIKES HAVE FORMED ACROSS CENTRAL AND NORTHEAST OREGON EARLY THIS AFTERNOON. EXPECT THESE TO CONTINUE THROUGH EARLY EVENING UNTIL SUNSET. AM NOT EXPECTING SEVERE WEATHER...BUT THE LIGHTNING MAY BE NUMEROUS WITH BRIEF HEAVY DOWNPOURS. THERE IS ANOTHER SHORT WAVE ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE UPPER TROUGH WHICH IS NOW LOCATED OFF VANCOUVER ISLAND. THE UPPER FLOW WILL BECOME MORE WESTERLY IN RESPONSE TO A BUILDING UPPER FOUR CORNERS HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM. THIS WILL CAUSE THE UPPER STEERING CURRENTS TO KEEP THIS NEXT WAVE NORTH OF OUR FORECAST AREA ON SUNDAY. AS THE FOUR CORNERS HIGH CONTINUES TO BUILD INTO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST IT WILL RESULT IN A WARMING AND DRYING THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE SHORT TERM FORECAST PERIOD WITH NEAR SEASONAL NORMAL TEMPERATURES. RSC. EXTENDED...THE UPPER LEVEL RIDGE WILL BUILD WESTWARD OVER THE WESTERN UNITED STATES BEGINNING TUESDAY WITH THE UPPER RIDGE AXIS MOVING TO WASHINGTON/OREGON BY FRIDAY. SOUTHERLY FLOW IN THE MID LEVELS WILL TRANSPORT MONSOON MOISTURE INTO EASTERN OREGON ON TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY FOR A SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OVER THE BLUE MOUNTAINS AND THE WALLOWA MOUNTAINS AS WELL AS THE GRANDE RONDE VALLEY AND THE JOHN DAY BASIN.
