SOUTH CENTRAL AND SOUTHEAST MONTANA FORECAST DISCUSSION...COR SPOT POPS
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BILLINGS MT
309 PM MDT MON AUG 6 2001

.TUE AND WED...
TWO FEATURES MAIN FEATURES WILL IMPACT THE CWA THE NEXT TWO DAYS.
FIRST FEATURE IS THE UPPER LEVEL CIRCULATION OVER NEVADA WHICH IS
WORKING AROUND THE UPPER LEVEL HIGH PRESSURE. HIGH LEVEL MOISTURE
ASSOCIATED WITH THIS FEATURE WILL SPREAD INTO THE CWA LATE TONIGHT AND
CONTINUE THROUGH WEDNESDAY. MODELS DONT APPEAR TO HAVE A GREAT HANDLE
ON THIS LOW. EVEN THOUGH...MOISTURE AND LIFT THAT WILL HEAD INTO THE
AREA WILL NOT BE THAT SIGNIFICANT. SO WILL KEEPS POPS LOW FOR TONIGHT
AND WEDNESDAY MOST AREAS.

SECOND FEATURE IS A SHORT WAVE TROUGH WHICH BREAKS OFF THE MAIN
LOW ALONG THE COAST AND HEADS INTO BC COAST. MODELS FORECAST THE SHORT
WAVE TO HEAD EAST OF THE DIVIDE IN ALBERTA TONIGHT. THE SHORT WAVE IS
FORECAST TO PUSH A WEAK COLD FRONT THROUGH CENTRAL AND EASTERN SECTIONS
OF THE CWA TUESDAY NIGHT. MODELS DIFFER ON THE AMOUNT OF COOL AIR THAT
SEAPS INTO THE AREA. CONSIDERING THE MAIN LOW STILL HANGS OFF SHORE...
WILL LEAN TOWARD TO WARMER SOLUTION...WHICH BRINGS A 5-10F DEGREE DROP
IN TEMPS FOR WEDNESDAY.

MOISTURE AND FORCING WILL STRENGTHEN FOR WEDNESDAY. DONT HAVE A LOT
OF CONFIDENCE IN THE TIMING/EXACT LOCATION OF SHORT WAVES. SO WILL
BROADBRUSH THE FORECAST MENTION CHANCE POPS ALL ZONES. MOORE

.THU...FRI...SAT...SUN...MON...

EXTENDED MODELS ARE IN SLIGHT DISAGREEMENT. MRF AND AVN ARE SIMILAR
THROUGH FRIDAY. HOWEVER...BY SATURDAY THE NEW AVN IS SHOWING A SHORTWAVE
BRUSHING ACROSS THE CANADIAN BORDER WHEREAS THE MRF CONTINUES TO SHOW
THE RIDGE. THE UKMET AND ECMWF ARE IN AGREEMENT WITH THE NEW AVN.
SO WILL GO WITH THE IDEA OF A SHORTWAVE KEEPING THE FLOW MORE ZONAL AND
MENTION A CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS THROUGH THE PERIOD. AFTER THE PASSAGE
OF THIS SHORTWAVE...THE RIDGE COULD BUILD AGAIN...ALLOWING FOR A SLIGHT
WARMING TREND. CONFINDENCE AT THE MOMENT IS NOT HIGH SO WILL NOT MAKE
ANY MAJOR CHANGES.
