FORECAST DISCUSSION FOR EASTERN NORTH DAKOTA AND NORTHWEST MINNESOTA
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE EASTERN ND/GRAND FORKS ND
415 AM CDT MON MAY 14 2001

FORECAST CHALLENGE IS PCPN. CURRENT SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWS MOSTLY
CI OVER CWFA. KMVX HAS AREA OF TSRA RIDING DOWN UPPER LEVEL RIDGE
FROM CANADA INTO NW MN AND BACKBUILDING TO THE W. LATEST MSAS SFC
PRESSURE ANALYSIS HAS ONE LOW CENTERED IN SW ND AND ANOTHER ALONG
THE SK/MB LINE. WHEN COMPARING INITIALIZATION CONDITIONS TO
MODELS...AVN BETTER MATCH...SO PRIMARILY UTILIZED FOR FORECAST.
INITIAL MCS IS EXPECTED TO MOVE THROUGH FAR E CWFA THIS MORNING...
FOLLOWING THICKNESSES IN SE-S TRAJECTORY. WILL KEEP SVR WORDING IN
ZONES FOR E CWFA AS STILL HAVE HAIL THREAT. THEN...700 MB TEMPS AND
Q-VECTOR DIVERGENCE INDICATE THAT MAJORITY OF CWFA WILL REMAIN
CAPPED THROUGH MUCH OF TODAY...ESPECIALLY ND SIDE AND WC MN.
HOWEVER...AS LOW MOVES INTO RED RIVER VALLEY THIS AFTERNOON...CAP
WEAKENS...SHOWALTERS AND LI'S STILL WELL BELOW ZERO AND HAVE SFC
DEWPOINTS RISING INTO UPPER 50S TO LOWER 60S...WILL KEEP CHC
AFTERNOON TSRA FOR RED RIVER VALLEY AND E TODAY. AFTER FRONT MOVES
THROUGH CWFA THIS EVENING...SEE RAPID STABILIZATION WITH GOOD
Q-VECTOR DIVERGENCE FOR VALLEY AREA...SO JUST KEPT EVENING CHC TSRA.
UPPER LEVEL SHORTWAVE MOVES THROUGH RIDGE BY 12Z TUE...SO KEPT CHC
TSRA ALL NIGHT FOR MN SIDE.

NEXT COLD FRONT...WITH GOOD Q-VECTOR CONVERGENCE...MOVES INTO E ND
BY 18Z TUE...BRINGING NEXT CHC TSRA. WITH UPPER LEVEL RIDGE SHIFTING
E...SEE BETTER SFC BASED TSRA THREAT. HOWEVER...IF THERE IS ENOUGH
MOISTURE WILL BE THE QUESTION...WITH SFC DEWPOINTS IN UPPER 40S TO
LOWER 50S. BELIEVE WILXL BE SUFFICIENT FOR SCT TSRA...SO KEPT CHC
POPS IN FORECAST. WHEN LOOKING AT EXTENDED FORECAST...STILL HAVE
GOOD CONTINUITY...SO WILL NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES AT THIS TIME.

.FGF...NONE.
