AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GRAND RAPIDS MI
315 PM EDT SUN SEP 23 2001

MAIN FORECAST PROBLEMS IN THE NEAR TERM ARE FOR POPS...WINDS AND
TEMPS. SFC LOW CENTER OVER LAKE MICHIGAN ATTM. SOME LIGHTNING NOTED
LAST HOUR OR TWO APPROACHING EXTREME SW GRR CWA. BEST CHC OF TSRA
DURING THE EVENING WILL BE ACROSS THE SE QUARTER OF THE CWA...SO
WILL LIMIT MENTION TO THERE. FOR TONIGHT...WILL KEEP CAT POPS DURING
THE EVENING ACROSS THE EASTERN CWA TAPERING TO SCT SHRA AFT
MIDNIGHT. FOR THE WESTERN HALF...WILL GO CHC POPS AS BACK EDGE OF
DEEPER MOISTURE MOVES THROUGH BY 00Z.

WINDS PICK UP TONIGHT AS STRONG CAA BEGINS. CONDITIONS UPSTREAM IN
THE TIGHT GRADIENT SHOW SFC WINDS IN THE 10 TO 20 KT RANGE WITH
GUSTS TO 30 KTS. 12Z MODELS WERE SLIGHTLY WEAKER WITH THE LL
JET...BUT ARE STILL SHOWING WINDS GREATER THAN 40 KTS AT 2 KFT AGL
DURING THE EARLY MORNING HOURS. CAA ONGOING AT THAT TIME WOULD
SUGGEST SOME STRONG WINDS POSSIBLE OVERNIGHT AND DURING THE DAY ON
MONDAY...THOUGH MOS WINDS ARE NOT PROGGED TO BE EXCESSIVE. WILL KEEP
WINDY WORDING GOING FOR THE OVERNIGHT AND ON MON.

UPPER LOW APPEARS TO BE A BIT MORE PROGRESSIVE THAN YESTERDAYS
MODELS WERE SHOWING...BUT WILL BE OVER LOWER MICHIGAN ON MONDAY WITH
SCATTERED SHRA EXPECTED TO DEVELOP IN THE INSTABILITY ASSOCIATED
WITH THE UPPER COLD POOL. WITH STRONG CAA AND CLOUDS...WILL UNDERCUT
NGM MOS MAXES ON MONDAY...AND GO WITH COMPROMISE WITH COLDER AVN MOS
MAXES.

WILL KEEP CHC POPS MON NIGHT AND TUE AS UPPER LOW SLOWLY MOVES EAST.
WITH LOTS OF CLOUDS EXPECTED...WILL LIMIT DIURNAL TEMP RANGE. LATER
SHIFTS WILL HAVE TO WATCH FOR POTENTIAL FOR SOME CLEARING TUE
NIGHT...IN WHICH CASE...POTENTIAL FOR FROST WILL BE A PROBLEM.

OSTUNO

EXTENDED FORECAST DISCUSSION...

...UNSEASONABLY COOL WEATHER WITH A CHANCE OF SHOWERS WILL LINGER
INTO WEDNESDAY. TEMPERATURES WILL MODERATE AND DRY WEATHER WILL
RETURN FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE EXTENDED PERIOD...

WITH THE H5 LOW JUST TO OUR EAST WEDNESDAY... WE WILL CONTINUE TO
HANG ON TO A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF CLOUD COVER. IMPULSES OF H5
ENERGY PINWHEELING AROUND THE UPPER LOW WILL GIVE US A CHANCE OF
SHOWERS... THOUGH MOST OF THE DAY SHOULD BE DRY. WE WOULD LOGICALLY
EXPECT THE BEST CHANCE FOR SHOWERS ACROSS OUR EASTERN CWA CLOSER TO
THE H5 LOW... WHERE 90 PERCENT RH FROM 700 MB DOWN TO THE SFC WILL
HANG AROUND THROUGH THE AFTERNOON AS 12Z AVN GUIDANCE AND TIME
HEIGHT RH CROSS SECTIONS SUGGEST.

THE H5 LOW AND TROUGH AXIS WILL FINALLY BEGIN TO SHIFT EAST THURSDAY
AS A RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE BUILDS INTO OUR REGION. SO WE WILL
FINALLY GET SOME SUNSHINE... WHICH WILL HELP TO BOOST MAX TEMPS INTO
THE LOWER TO PERHAPS MIDDLE 60S AS INDICATED BY THE LATEST MEX
GUIDANCE.

FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE PERIOD... THE ECMWF THROUGH 12Z SATURDAY
AND MRF GUIDANCE THROUGH THE WEEKEND SHOW A SFC HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE
WILL DOMINATE OUR WX PATTERN. AS A RESULT WE/LL HAVE CLEAR TO PARTLY
CLOUDY SKIES WITH SEASONABLE TEMPS IN THE 60S DAILY... AND LOWS
MAINLY IN THE 40S.
