Heavy rain and snowmelt toward the end of January caused minor flooding along the Wabash River. Lafayette reached 11.5 feet late on the 31st which is a half a foot above flood stage. Only agricultural bottomland was effected.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE INDIANAPOLIS IN 330 AM EST WED JAN 31 2001 MAIN PROBLEM IN MORNING FORECAST IS POTENTIAL FOR AN SIGNIFICANT SNOW...MAINLY FLURRIES NEXT 36 HOURS AND WHETHER ANY SNOW WILL AFFECT THE CWA THURSDAY NIGHT IN ADVANCE OF STRONGER SHORTWAVE. UPPER SYSTEM FINALLY STARTING TO STRETCH EASTWARD ACROSS THE LOWER GREAT LAKES WHICH INDICATES A TREND TOWARD ACCELERATING EASTWARD MOVEMENT OUT OF THE AREA. UPPER ROTATIONAL CENTER EVIDENT IN SWIS SATELLITE LOOP OVER NORTHEAST INDIANA WITH MOVEMENT TO THE EAST. UPPER TROF EXTENDS WESTSOUTHWEST TO NORTHERN MISSOURI. THE UPPER TROF INDICATED IN MODELS FROM NORTHERN OKLAHOMA TO CENTRAL NEW MEXICO IS NOT WELL DEFINED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY BUT MODELS ENHANCE THIS FEATURE AS IT MOVES TO THE EASTNORTHEAST TODAY. THINK MAIN EFFECT OF THIS FEATURE WILL BE CONTINUED CLOUDY SKIES FAR SOUTHERN INDIANA AND ONLY FLURRIES. NEXT SOUTHEAST MOVING UPPER TROF TO APPROACH THE AREA THURSDAY EVENING BUT MAIN ENERGY STAYS OVER THE NORTHERN GREAT LAKES AND MOISTURE WITH SYSTEM SOMEWHAT LIMITED. DID MENTION OCCASIONAL FLURRIES THURSDAY NIGHT ACROSS THE AREA BUT WITH LOW POPS NO SIGNIFICANT EVENT EXPECTED. TEMPERATURES THIS MORNING STILL HOLDING IN THE MIDDLE 30S ACROSS THE CWA AND WESTWARD INTO CENTRAL ILLINOIS. COLDER AIR REMAINED OVER THE NORTHERN MISSISSIPPI VALLEY AND EASTERN DAKOTAS.
