AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PADUCAH KY
245 AM CST WED FEB 21 2001
PRIMARY FORECAST CONCERN IS PRECIP TYPE AND AMOUNT WITH PASSAGE OF
SHORTWAVE TONIGHT. ON THE 08Z SURFACE MAP...A COLD FRONT CONTINUED
TO SAG SLOWLY SOUTH OF THE AREA AND STRETCHED FROM TEXAS TO
VIRGINIA. IR LOW CLOUD/FOG CHANNEL CONTINUED TO PICK UP LOW CLOUDS
ACROSS THE ENTIRE REGION...HOWEVER CEILINGS WERE GENERALLY VFR. KPAH
88D TIME LAPSE CONTINUED TO INDICATE LIGHT RAIN OVER MAINLY WEST
KENTUCKY...WITH THE RETURNS FARTHER NORTH OVER SOUTHERN ILLINOIS
LIKELY NOT REACHING THE GROUND.
FOR TODAY...FRONT WILL REMAIN TO OUR SOUTH...AND THE PRECIP
OCCURRING OVER WEST KENTUCKY SHOULD COME TO AN END WITHIN THE NEXT
FEW HOURS. WILL WAIT UNTIL CLOSER TO ZONE ISSUANCE TIME TO HANDLE ANY
LINGERING PRECIP. THEN AS HIGH PRESSURE NOSES IN...BELIEVE SKIES
WILL ATTEMPT TO PARTIALLY CLEAR...ESPECIALLY OVER NORTHERN COUNTIES.
SO WILL MAINTAIN A PARTLY SUNNY FORECAST NORTH...WITH MOSTLY CLOUDY
SOUTH. MAV/FWC TEMPS ACCEPTABLE.
BY LATE THIS AFTERNOON...AN UPPER DISTURBANCE APPROACHES FROM THE
CENTRAL PLAINS AND INTRODUCES A CHANCE OF PRECIP...LATE TODAY IN
SEMO...THEN OVERSPREADING THE REST OF THE AREA TONIGHT. WHILE ALL
THREE MODELS ARE FAIRLY CONSISTENT WITH THEIR HANDLING OF THIS
FEATURE...THE ETA DOES SEEM TO OVERDEVELOP THE LOW AND INVERTED
TROUGH OVER THE SOUTHEASTERN STATES BY THURSDAY MORNING. WHEN
COMPARED WITH THE NGM AND AVN...THE ETA QPF FORECAST ALSO APPEARS
OVERDONE...ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THE MUCH DRIER AIR THAT WILL
CONTINUE TO INFILTRATE THE REGION TODAY. NONETHELESS...I WILL NEED
TO REINTRODUCE PRECIP INTO THE FORECAST FOR TONIGHT. AFTER
COORDINATION WITH KILX...I WILL GO WITH 40 POPS NORTH AND 50 POPS
SOUTH.
NEXT QUESTION IS RELATED TO PRECIP TYPE. ETA/AVN MODEL SOUNDINGS
SUPPORT MAINLY SNOW...POSSIBLY MIXED WITH SLEET OVER NORTHERN
COUNTIES (NORTH OF A LINE FROM PERRYVILLE MO TO CALHOUN KY). WITH
ABOVE FREEZING 850 MB AIR NUDGING INTO SOUTHERN ZONES AND SURFACE
TEMPERATURES ABOVE FREEZING...BELIEVE PRECIP THERE WILL BE
PREDOMINANTLY RAIN...POSSIBLY MIXED WITH SLEET AT TIMES. WITH THE
WARMER GROUND TEMPERATURES OF LATE AND THE SMALL AMOUNT OF PRECIP
EXPECTED...DO NOT BELIEVE THIS EVENT WARRANTS AN ADVISORY AT THIS
TIME. OTHERWISE...FWC/MAV TEMPS AGAIN LOOK REASONABLE.
ALL NUMERICAL GUIDANCE SHIFTS THE PRECIP CHANCE EAST OF THE FORECAST
AREA ON THURSDAY...WITH CLOUDS DECREASING AS WELL. GLANCING AT THE
LATEST MRF RUN...EXTENDED PORTION OF FORECAST STILL ON TRACK. WILL
KEEP THUNDER IN SOUTHERN ZONES ON SATURDAY...AS IT IS STILL TOO FAR
AWAY TO MAKE AN ACCURATE ASSESSMENT.
.PAH...NONE.
