WESTERN COLORADO & EASTERN UTAH AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GRAND JUNCTION CO 329 AM MDT MON SEP 17 2001 ACTIVE WEATHER DAY IN STORE FOR EASTERN UTAH AND WESTERN COLORADO. KGJX WSR-88D ALREADY QUITE ACTIVE WITH SCATTERED TO NUMEROUS SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS. ACTIVITY WEAKENS AS IT DROPS INTO THE VALLEYS...BUT STILL SEEING SOME RAIN. THIS WILL BE THE TREND FOR THE ENTIRE DAY AS UPPER LEVEL TROUGH/LOW OVER NRN UT WILL BE MOVING EAST TODAY AND TONIGHT. ENERGY EJECTING OUT OF THE TROUGH WILL BE SENT ENE AND WILL BE AIDED BY THE LEFT EXIT REGION OF H3 JET MAX WHICH BECOMES ORIENTED ALONG UTAH/ARIZONA AND COLORADO/NEW MEXICO STATE LINES. PRECIPITABLE WATER VALUES FROM UPSTREAM SOUNDINGS AND FCST MODEL SOUNDINGS NOT THAT IMPRESSIVE. HOWEVER...RADAR RETURNS THIS MORNING INDICATE SOME MODERATE RAIN IS LIKELY FALLING OVER THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS...SO WL CONTINUE MENTION OF LOCALLY HEAVY RAIN FOR THE MOUNTAIN REGIONS TODAY. SMALL HAIL THREAT ALSO LOOKS LEGIT WITH SIGNIFICANT COOLING ALOFT. SOME SNOW WILL LIKELY OVER THE HIGHEST PEAKS TODAY...WITH SNOW LEVELS DROPPING TO AS LOW AS 10K TONIGHT. NOT EXPECTING WIDESPREAD ACCUMULATIONS AT PASS LEVELS...ALTHOUGH CONVECTIVELY AIDED SNOW SHOWERS COULD DROP A FEW INCHES OF WET SNOW. TROUGH AXIS TIMED TO SLIDE THROUGH AROUND MIDNIGHT TONIGHT...WITH NWLY FLOW SETTING UP FOR TUE. THIS WL PUT THE EMPHASIS OF ANY ADDITIONAL PRECIP ON TUE OVER THE NRN MTNS...WITH ONLY ISOLATED MORNING ACTIVITY ELSEWHERE. FAIRLY FLAT...ZONAL PATTERN THEN BUILDS OVER THE AREA FROM WEDNESDAY THROUGH THE END OF THE WEEK. OVERALL...PATTERN APPEARS TO BE DRY... BUT WEAK DISTURBANCES IN THE FLOW MAY BRING SOME MOUNTAIN SHOWERS FROM TIME-TO-TIME. NOT PLANNING ANY CHANGES TO EXTENDED PERIODS THOUGH...AS THIS WILL BE TOUGH TO TIME AT THIS POINT...AND WL MAKE ADJUSTMENTS AS THE WEEK WEARS ON. WESTERN COLORADO AND EASTERN UTAH EMERGENCY MANAGERS SHOULD MAINTAIN A HEIGHTENED LEVEL OF WEATHER AWARENESS THROUGH TONIGHT DUE TO SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS...SOME WHICH WILL PRODUCE LOCALLY HEAVY RAIN AND SMALL HAIL. IN ADDITION...SNOW LEVELS WILL LOWER TO AROUND 10K BY TONIGHT WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF SOME ACCUMULATIONS NEAR CONVECTIVE SHOWERS. COLTON .GJT...NONE.
