INTERIOR CENTRAL CALIFORNIA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY - HANFORD CA 225 PM PDT WED JUN 13 2001 SURFACE GRADIENTS CONTINUE TO WEAKEN THIS AFTERNOON OVER THE FORECAST AREA AS THE STRONG JET AND VORT MAX OVER NEVADA RAPIDLY HEADS SOUTHEAST INTO ARIZONA AND UTAH. WINDS HOWEVER CONTINUE TO BE GUSTY OVER ESPECIALLY THE WEST SIDE OF THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY AND POINTS NORTH OF FRESNO. IN THE KERN MOUNTAINS AND DESERTS HOWEVER...WIND REALLY DROPPED OFF AS THE FLOW HAS BECOME NORTHEAST. EXPECT THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY WINDS TO SLOWLY DIMINISH THIS AFTERNOON AND REALLY DROP OFF AFTER SUNSET. WATER VAPOR IMAGERY SHOWS BIG UPPER LOW STILL CHUGGING SLOWLY EASTWARD OVER THE NORTHERN ROCKIES WHILE A STRONG HIGH CENTERED NEAR 37/137 SHIFTS EAST. CENTRAL CALIFORNIA WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF THE HIGH DURING THE NEXT 2 TO 3 DAYS WITH MUCH LIGHTER WINDS...AND WARMER TEMPERATURES. MODEL PROGS INDICATE HEIGHTS TO RISE ABOUT 30 METERS ON THURSDAY AND AGAIN ON FRIDAY WITH 850 MILIBAR TEMPERATURES TO RISE 4 TO 5 DEGREES CELSIUS BY LATE FRIDAY. THIS WILL ALLOW FOR A WARM UP...BUT NOT A HEAT WAVE AS TEMPERATURES SHOULD RISE WELL INTO THE 90S IN THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY WITH A FEW LOW 100S IN THE WARMER LOCATIONS OF THE KERN DESERTS. IN THE EXTENDED FORECAST...ALL LONG RANGE MODELS AGREE IN PRINCIPLE IN BUILDING A LARGE RIDGE OVER THE SOUTHWEST WITH THE JET AND WESTERLIES SHUNTED NORTHWARD TOWARD THE CANADIAN BORDER. THE STRENGTH OF THE RIDGE SEEMS TO BE THE ONLY POINT OF CONTENTION AS THE MRF/UKMET/ECMWF BUILD HEIGHTS TO AROUND 5880 METERS BY SUNDAY....WHILE THE NOGAPS IS STRONGER WITH THE HIGH.
