Area forecast discussion, Jul 7, 2:15 AM PST, 4 hours 5 minutes before
MOJAVE DESERT/SOUTHERN GREAT BASIN AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LAS VEGAS NV
315 AM PDT SAT JUL 7 2001

SYNOPSIS...A FLOW OF DEEP MONSOONAL MOISTURE WILL CONTINUE OVER THE
SOUTHERN GREAT BASIN AND MOJAVE DESERT THROUGH TODAY. THE
ATMOSPHERE WILL REMAIN VERY MOIST AND UNSTABLE PRODUCING ANOTHER
ROUND OF THUNDERSTORMS WITH THE THREAT OF LOCALIZED HEAVY RAIN. A
SLIGHT DRYING TREND IS EXPECTED ON SUNDAY FOR A DECREASE IN
THUNDERSTORM CHANCES.

DISCUSSION...LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER ACTIVE DAY IS ON TAP...ALTHOUGH THE
WEATHER SCENARIO IS NOT NEARLY AS CUT AND DRY AS YESTERDAY. SOME MID
LEVEL DRYING HAS INTRUDED ON THE SOUTHERN CWA EARLY THIS MORNING...
WHICH WILL ALLOW FOR MORE SUNSHINE. OBVIOUSLY...THIS SHOULD PROVIDE
A BOOST TO OUR HIGH TEMPERATURES WHICH WERE WELL BELOW NORMAL
YESTERDAY GIVEN ALL THE CLOUD COVER. ALSO...THIS WILL ALLOW FOR MORE
POWERFUL STORMS TO DEVELOP AS WELL. GIVEN THE NATURE OF THE
AIRMASS...ANY STORMS THAT DEVELOP WILL BE VERY EFFICIENT RAIN
PRODUCERS. THUS...I HAVE DECIDED TO ISSUE A FLASH FLOOD WATCH FOR
OUR CALIFORNIA ZONES EXCEPT FOR THOSE AREAS ALONG THE LOWER COLORADO
RIVER.

ALTHOUGH THE MAIN VORTMAX ASSOCIATED WITH YESTERDAY'S ACTIVITY HAS
LEFT THE AREA. THERE REMAINS A SECONDARY ASSOCIATED CIRCULATION IN
THE FLOW...AND THIS WILL PLAY A ROLE AND HELP WITH ANY CONVECTIVE
DEVELOPMENT TODAY AND THIS EVENING. ADD A FAVORABLE DIFFLUENT FLOW
ALOFT TO THE MIX AND ALL SIGNS POINT TO SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA FOR
FLOOD POTENTIAL. SOME OF THIS ACTIVITY MAY SPILL OVER INTO NEVADA...
ESPECIALLY CLARK AND ESMERALDA COUNTIES. THE DAYSHIFT WILL NEED TO
MONITOR THIS CLOSELY TO SEE IF ANY EXPANSION OF THE FLASH FLOOD
WATCH IS NEEDED. THERE IS ALSO A RISK OF SEVERE WEATHER TODAY...BUT
I WOULD CONSIDER THIS RISK TO BE SECONDARY TO THE RISK OF FLOODING
AND THE WIND FIELDS ALOFT AREN'T AS FAVORABLE AS THEY WERE YESTERDAY
FOR THIS TYPE OF OCCURRENCE.

MODELS CONTINUE TO SUGGEST A DECREASING TREND IN PRECIPITATION
POSSIBILITIES AND THIS IS ACCEPTED. HOWEVER...THE LOW LEVEL MOISTURE
IN PLACE IN NOT REALLY IN ANY HURRY TO LEAVE THE AREA...AND I AM
HESITANT TO INTRODUCE ANY DRYING GIVEN THE RECENT MODEL STRUGGLES
WITH THIS FLOW PATTERN. FOR NOW...I HAVE DECREASED POPS ON
SUNDAY...BUT HAVE MAINTAINED A BROAD-BRUSH FORECAST FOR THE EXTENDED
PERIOD. JAH

.LAS...A FLASH FLOOD WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED. PLEASE }REFER TO THE
LATEST RNOFFALAS STATEMENT FOR DETAILS.
