AN UPPER LOW WILL MOVE SOUTH OFF THE WA AND OREGON COAST TONIGHT AND
INTO NORTHERN CA FRIDAY NIGHT. IT WEAKENS SLOWLY DURING THIS TIME
THEN FILLS MORE RAPIDLY FRIDAY NIGHT AND SATURDAY AS IT TURNS TO THE
EAST. THE MAIN FORECAST PROBLEM WITH THIS IS HOW MUCH PRECIPITATION
WILL BE SHADOWED BY THE SIERRA. THE ETA GENERATES OVER 2.5 INCHES OF
WATER ON THE WEST SLOPES OF THE SIERRA BUT BRINGS ONLY ABOUT A HALF
INCH TO THE WEST SIDE OF THE TAHOE AREA AND LESS THAN A TENTH OF AN
INCH TO MOST OF THIS AREA. THE AVN HAS LESS ON THE WEST SLOPES BUT
BRINGS ALMOST THREE QUARTERS OF AN INTO THE TAHOE AREA AND A QUARTER
TO A THIRD OF AN INCH INTO THE RENO AREA. ALL THIS WILL FALL AS SNOW.
THE ETA TENDS TO BRING TOO LITTLE PRECIP TO THE EAST SLOPES SO THE AVN
AMOUNTS MAY BE BETTER. THEN AGAIN...LITTLE PRECIP FALLS WITH THE
INITIAL COLD FRONT BUT COMES INSTEAD WITH THE COLD POOL AND THIS
SOMETIMES DOES SHADOW OUT ABOUT AS MUCH AS THE ETA SHOWS. FOR NOW THE
FORECASTS HAVE BEEN BASED ON THE AVN SOLUTION.
THE SNOW SHOULD LET UP DURING THE DAY SATURDAY BUT COULD BECOME HEAVY
AGAIN SATURDAY NIGHT AS THE NEXT LOW MOVES IN. ANOTHER POTENTIAL
PERIOD OF SIGNIFICANT SNOW FALL COULD DEVELOP IN SOUTH OF RENO MONDAY
NIGHT AS THE LOW MOVES SOUTH OF HERE AND MOISTURE WRAPS AROUND IT ON
THE EAST OF THE SIERRA. DRY WEATHER SHOULD RETURN IN THE NORTH
WEDNESDAY AND IN ALL ZONES THURSDAY.
