911 AM PST THU FEB 22 2001
SURFACE COLD FRONT EXTENDING OFFSHORE NEAR MONTEREY BAY AT THE MOMENT
WITH THE SURFACE LOW CENTER SITUATED ALONG THE NORCAL COAST. BAND OF
PRECIPITATION ASSOCIATED WITH THE FRONT IS JUST NOW ENTERING THE
NORTHWEST PORTION OF MERCED COUNTY AND MOVING SOUTHEAST ABOUT 20 MPH
WHICH WILL PUT IT AT MERCED AROUND 10 AM. A FEW LIGHT SHOWERS ALSO
STARTING TO DEVELOP IN THE YOSEMITE AREA. THE SOUTHERN END OF THIS
FRONTAL BAND OF RAIN IS FAIRLY LIGHT BUT ENERGY IS ROTATING UNDERNEATH
THE UPPER LOW AND SHOULD PROVIDE ENOUGH SUPPORT TO MAINTAIN THE BAND OF
PRECIPITATION AS IT MOVES ACROSS THE CENTRAL VALLEY THIS MORNING. EXPECT
PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS IN THE CENTRAL VALLEY LOCALLY UP TO A QUARTER INCH
AS THE BAND OF PRECIPITATION PASSES THROUGH. PRECIPITATION DROPS OFF TO
SCATTERED SHOWERS BEHIND THE FRONT. COLDER AIR ALOFT GRADUALLY WORKING
WORKING SOUTH WITH THE UPPER LOW. 12Z OAK RAOB SHOWING MINUS 25 DEGREES
C AT 500 MB. MESO ETA CONTINUES TO SHOW NOTABLE INSTABILITY ACROSS THE
FORECAST AREA TODAY AND WITH THE COLD AIR ALOFT FEEL THAT ISOLATED
THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE OVER THE CENTRAL VALLEY...ESPECIALLY IF WE
RECEIVE SOME SURFACE HEATING BEHIND THE FRONT.
THE MOST SIGNIFICANT PRECIPITATION SHOULD ARRIVE TONIGHT WITH DEEPER
MOISTURE PROGGED OVER THE AREA. QPF AMOUNTS REMAIN RATHER LOW. WILL
UPDATE THE FORECAST TO ADJUST PRECIPITATION TIMING TODAY.
