High Wind in Alaska, March 4, 2001
A strong 954 Mb low moved through the Nikolski area Sunday morning to just north of Cold Bay. Strong northwest winds peaked at 89 mph at Atka at 7:15 am Sunday.

A strong 954 Mb low moved through the Nikolski area Sunday morning to just north of Cold Bay. Strong northwest winds peaked at 89 mph at Atka at 7:15 am Sunday. Winds continued to gust at warning levels through 1:15 p.m. A gust of 111 mph, recorded on the AWOS observation from 041715Z, was checked out with FAA, who confirmed the likely accuracy of this report. AWOS systems are set up so that the gust value is averaged over a 5 second period during a 10 minute interval. AWOS reports archived and sent into the FAA DAWN system at the site are set up at 20 minute intervals. This means that reports only reflect 5 second average gusts for 50% of the 20 minute period.
