Flash Flooding and Hail in Virginia, July 28, 2000
During the afternoon and evening of the 28th, thunderstorms which produced winds in excess of 55 MPH, heavy rainfall, frequent lightning, and hail moved across northern Virginia. In Augusta County, heavy rain flooded roads in Sherando and Staunton.

During the afternoon and evening of the 28th, thunderstorms which produced winds in excess of 55 MPH, heavy rainfall, frequent lightning, and hail moved across northern Virginia. In Augusta County, heavy rain flooded roads in Sherando and Staunton. Gypsy Hill Park in Staunton was also closed by high water. Rainfall totals included 2.25 inches in Staunton and 1.54 inches in Sherando. In Albemarle County, dime sized hail fell at the Charlottesville Airport. High water also closed roads in Charlottesville. In Nelson County, a lightning strike sparked a fire which destroyed a barn in Faber. A total of 2.76 inches of rain fell in Rockfish. In Rockingham County, a total of 1.95 inches fell in Briery Branch. Rainfall totals in Shenandoah County included 2.45 inches in Zepp and 1.70 inches at Fetzer Gap. In Fauquier County, pea to dime sized hail fell in Opal, where 2.00 inches was recorded in 30 minutes. In Culpeper County, 1.70 inches of rain fell in Culpeper. In Madison County, 1.59 inches of rain fell in Syria. In Prince William County, trees were downed and 2.98 inches of rain fell at Lake Jackson. Dime sized hail fell in Manassas. In Fairfax County, a tree was downed onto the beltway at Braddock Road and trees were downed near George Mason University in Fairfax. Five county homes were damaged by lightning. Rainfall totals included 2.65 inches at Ft. Belvoir, 2.56 inches in Springfield, 2.25 inches in Reston, 2.10 inches in Annandale, and 1.52 inches in Herndon. In Spotsylvania County, trees were downed along the Rappahannock River 3 miles west of Interstate 95. In Stafford County, 2.75 inches of rain fell in less than 30 minutes near Stafford. In Loudoun County, 1.65 inches of rain fell at Dulles International Airport where winds gusted to 53 MPH. A total of 2.21 inches of rain fell in Arlington.
