Scattered thunderstorms formed over the northern half of Virginia during the afternoon of the 4th. These storms produced frequent lightning, hail, winds in excess of 55 MPH, and very heavy rainfall. In Nelson County, a produce shed burned to the ground after being hit by lightning. In Shenandoah County, a heavy downpour caused water to cover streets and sidewalks in Woodstock. In Orange County, quarter sized hail fell in Orange and a wind gust of 45 MPH was recorded at the Orange Airport. Trees and power lines were downed countywide and just across the border into Madison County. Eight streets in Orange were blocked by downed trees and one car was damaged by a felled tree. In northern Spotsylvania County, an inch of rain fell in 30 minutes along the Rappahannock River. In Prince William County, heavy downpours flooded several county roads and one car was found partially submerged by law enforcement. Route 1 was closed by high water for an hour. In addition, gusty winds downed a tree in Manassas.
