Thunderstorms during the evening of the 27th through around midnight of the 28th produced hail up to golf ball size, damaging winds, damaging lightning, and flash flooding.Lightning struck the Montgomery County Pool, 1 mile north of Christiansburg, damaging the filter pump. Lightning also struck and damaged an automobile at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg. In Gladys lightning struck and killed 6 cows.Thunderstorm winds downed trees 7 miles south of the City of Martinsville, blocking State Route 688, and 5 miles south of Prilliman, destroying a mobile home.Heavy thunderstorm rains flooded and closed Route 130, four miles northwest of Madison Heights and flooded parts of Route 460 and washed out some gravel roads from Shawsville to Elliston. Heavy rains caused water to pool up to 1 foot deep on John Lynch Bridge in Lynchburg.
