Flash Flooding in Texas, June 17, 2000

Scattered thunderstorms developed over the northern portions of Presidio County, northern Brewster County, and over central portions of Pecos County during the early afternoon of 6/17/00. Strong thunderstorms producing very heavy rainfall moved slowly south across Presidio and Brewster counties during the afternoon. The Presidio County Sheriff's Office reported four feet of water on FM169 at Casa Piedra. Heavy rains also occurred at Cibilo Creek Ranch, just north of the community of Shafter. Officials from the Big Bend National Park reported that roads were closed due to flooding around the community of Castolon. The general public reported that East Corozon Draw, a draw feeding into Terlingua Creek, was running 4 feet deep during the early evening of the 17th. This caused a pickup truck to become stuck in flood waters. The man driving the pickup truck was uninjured during the event. Flood waters receded during the late evening of 6/17/00. Light rain continued across Brewster County overnight.Thunderstorms on June 17 also produced strong thunderstorm winds. These winds produced minor damage in Presidio County in the city of Presidio and also in the community of Redford. Estimated wind speeds were determined to be just below severe thresholds.
