Wildfire, Stanley

Where: Stanley County, 10 mi W of Mission Ridge

Coordinates: 44.412, -100.736 (the zone’s center; the record gives no point)

Lightning started a grassfire in western Stanley County in the early morning hours of the 17th. With the extremely dry and windy conditions, the fire quickly spread and consumed 25,000 acres of grassland before it was brought under control. Smoke from the fire was seen from 40 miles away. The fire also destroyed six outbuildings and an old unoccupied farmhouse. Some roads had to be closed due to the fire and smoke. Several electrical poles were also burned. Many residents were notified of possible evacuations.
