Damaging Winds in New Jersey, June 2, 2000

Lines of severe thunderstorms swept southeast across the region. They produced high winds that downed many trees and power lines and caused 3 injuries. A downburst occurred in Little Ferry.Here's a brief summary of damage reports received:In Passaic County, high winds downed numerous trees on Ridge Road in West Milford around 7:00 pm EDT and downed numerous electrical wires in Wayne around 7:13 pm. Large tree branches were downed in Ringwood.In Bergen County, a downburst produced wind gusts estimated near 80 mph that downed numerous trees in Little Ferry. Numerous trees and power lines were downed at several locations, including Hillsdale where a wind gust to 60 mph was measured around 7:12 pm EDT, Park Ridge about 7:18 pm, Saddle River and Montvale around 7:22 pm, and Paramus and Ramsey around 7:25 pm. Two people were injured from high winds: one in Hillsdale around 7:12 pm and the other in Ramsey around 7:25 pm, when a tree fell on a person. A building also collapsed on Jefferson Avenue in Westwood around 7:44 pm. At Teterboro Airport, a peak wind gust of 53 mph occurred from the west at 7:31 pm.In Essex County, a peak wind gust of 58 mph was measured from the northwest at Newark Airport at 7:31 pm EDT. A wind gust to 65 mph was measured in Orange around 7:32 pm. A large tree branch fell on and injured a child in East Orange around 7:39 pm. High winds also blew off a warehouse roof in Fairfield.In Union County, high winds downed trees and power lines in Elizabeth around 7:40 pm EDT.
