Excessive Heat and Damaging Winds in Maryland, June 2, 2000

During a hot and humid afternoon, a cold front crossed the region. This front triggered thunderstorms, some of which produced damaging winds, hail, and frequent lightning across central Maryland. In Carroll County, a wind gust of 45 MPH was recorded at Millers. In Montgomery County, pea sized hail fell in Potomac. Because of the heat of the day, two spectators attending the Kemper Open near Potomac had to be hospitalized for dehydration and heat exhaustion. Another 150 people in attendance were treated at the scene for dehydration. In Prince George's County, numerous trees were downed in Upper Marlboro where 1.37 inches of rain fell. Route 301 just north of Upper Marlboro was blocked by several fallen trees. Cars traveling along the road during the storm were pushed into the median by the same winds that downed the trees. In Anne Arundel County, trees were downed onto power lines and roads from Lothian to Harwood. Nearly 8400 customers lost power across the county. In Calvert County, trees and power lines were downed in Dunkirk and Prince Frederick. A woman who was standing near the front door of her Dunkirk home was struck by lightning. The bold knocked her to the ground and she was treated for minor injuries. A townhouse under construction in Prince Frederick was damaged by a fire which resulted from a lightning strike. In Charles County, trees were downed in La Plata where pea sized hail fell. Trees were also downed elsewhere in the county.
