A severe thunderstorm knocked down numerous trees and power lines throughout Sussex County. The worst damage occurred in the southeast part of the county in Stanhope Borough and Byram Township.

A severe thunderstorm knocked down numerous trees and power lines throughout Sussex County. The worst damage occurred in the southeast part of the county in Stanhope Borough and Byram Township. The least damage occurred in the southwest part of the county. Trees and wires were knocked down in Montague, Lake Owassa, Vernon, Newton, Stanhope and Byram Township. In Newton, windows were blown out and several walls were knocked down. In Vernon, the wall next to an outdoor pool collapsed. In Stanhope, the high winds damaged a concert tent at the Waterloo Village. Water restrictions were implemented in Stanhope because power was lost for about 24 hours. The severe thunderstorms caused 84,000 homes and businesses in the northern half of New Jersey to lose power; 60,000 of the outages occurred in Sussex, Warren, Morris and Hunterdon Counties. All power was restored by the 5th.
